The atomic structure of the (101)-c(8 x 10) surface was studied by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy and low-energy electron diffractometry. The surface consisted of zig-zag chain atoms, adatoms, dimers, re-bonded atoms, and rest atoms which were arranged at various levels and in various orientations. It was therefore more complicated than the Si(111)-7 x 7 surface.
