It was pointed out that it was generally accepted that, in buried strained-layer structures, the strain was relieved by paired misfit dislocations: one at the upper interface and one at the lower interface. However, this was not always true in practice. Here, the effect of a mixture of single and paired misfit dislocations was incorporated into the formula for excess force. The effects of a capping layer of arbitrary thickness, and the interaction of misfit dislocations at various interfaces, were also incorporated into the formula. Excess stresses were deduced on the basis of the latter. The formulae could predict the excess stress of strained layers with arbitrary heterostructure structures.
