It was recalled that Peierl’s 1940 model had proposed that dislocations arose from a compromise between long-range elastic forces and lattice periodicity. It implied that dislocation pairs interacted via a logarithmic potential. It was shown that the corresponding 1-dimensional statistical mechanics model exhibited a physically realizable dislocation-mediated melting transition of infinite order.
