Abstract: Aluminum casting is widely used in aeronautical, automobile and other industries nowadays. The Cellular Automaton (CA) method was modified to simulate the microstructure evolution of Al alloy casting. Simulated program code was developed and applied into Al casting production. A nucleation model was investigated based upon the experimental data. The solute diffusion in the liquid and solid phases was also considered in developing a grain growth model. With the developed models, not only grain structure but also dendritic microstructure can be predicted during the solidification process. The microstructure simulation of the Al alloy turbine wheel was studied in detail.

Abstract: The series of powders with the general formula of Ce0.8-xZrxLa0.2O1.9 (x=0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) and Ce0.8-xZrxY0.2O1.9 (x=0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The samples sintered at 1500°C all possess the single phase with cubic fluorite structure. The lattice parameter and the ionic conductivity decrease with increasing the content of Zr. However, the ionic conductivity of ceria co-doped with Zr and La reduces with decreasing the lattice strain.

Abstract: Sm3+ and Nd3+ co-doped CeO2 solid electrolytes with various thicknesses were prepared by citric-nitrate combustion process. The electrical conductivity as a function of electrolyte thickness was determined by ac impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the ionic conductivity increases with the decrease of the electrolyte thickness approximately and it was estimated that the conductivity enhancement was due to the increased grain boundary conductivity.

Abstract: A modified Cellular Automaton model was presented to simulate the evolution of dendritic microstructure in low pressure die casting of Al-Si Alloy, which accounted for the heterogeneous nucleation, the solute redistribution both in liquid and solid, the interface curvature and the growth anisotropy during solidification. The free growth of single equiaxed dendrite and the evolution of multi dendrites with various crystallographic orientations were predicted. The variation of the dendrite tip velocity and local solute concentration at the solid/liquid interface were analyzed. The grain morphology of aircraft turbine wheel casting at different specimen points were predicted and compared with experimental results.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline GDC as small as 5 nm was successfully synthesized via the co-precipitation method. GDC/YSZ core-shell nanocrystals, which were GDC nanocrystals overcoated by a thin YSZ layer, was successfully synthesized by the addition of GDC nanocrystals in the YSZ source solution using sol-gel method. The core-shell structure was supported by its high-resolution transmission electron microscopy results and the composition was investigated by EDX method.
