Abstract: Hydroxyapatite (HA) material, collected from human tooth, was calcined and then separated very easily to enamel HA (EHA) and dentine HA (DHA). The EHA and DHA were plasma sprayed on pre-prepared titanium implants. HeLa (a lineage malignant fibroblast cell) and primary fibroblast cells cell lines were used in this study. The results using fibroblasts from primary culture are interesting since the cells did not die or became apoptotic. However, this does not mean that the present method reveals the complete biocompatibility of the tested HA material. This study aimed to investigate if fibroblasts with fluorescent tests could be used as a secondary evaluation method for biocompatibity fibroblasts cell culture studies prior to osteoblasts cell culture.

Abstract: Different types of bone-graft substitutes have been developed and are in the market worldwide to eliminate the drawbacks of autogenous grafting. They vary in composition, strength, osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties, mechanism and rates by which they are resorbed and remodelled. Tooth derived hydroxyapatite (THA) is a novel biomaterial. This study was performed to determine the histological properties of THA on animals. A commercial coralline HA (CHA, Proosteon 200, Interpore Cross, USA) was used as control material. 20 sheeps were used and divided into 2 groups. Human THA (Group A) and CHA (Group B) materials were implanted to the tibiae of 10 sheeps for each group. The histological examinations of surrounding bone response were done 12 weeks after implantation. There was no significant difference histologically between group A and B. All materials were found to be surrounded by new bone tissue. THA was found to be as efficient as the standard CHA on histological basis. In addition, economical production of THA should be taken into consideration. Therefore, THA may be a viable alternative on bone grafting provided that clinical trials will be completed.

Abstract: This study demonstrates the use of human dentine derived hydroxyapatite (DHA) as an easily prepared graft material in 23 dogs and 5 cats with various orthopaedic problems. Results of these cases were evaluated clinically and radiographically. This study reveals that DHA can be used safely in animals and is an effective graft material.

Abstract: A simplified preparation method of silicon-substituted calcium phosphates with a very high yield (close to 100%) has been elaborated, according to the principles of Green Chemistry. The technique consists of mixing of crystals of calcium nitrate and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate in the desired proportions, following by addition of the necessary amount of a silicon-containing compound. The homogenous mixture is sintered between 900 and 1200°C. Either a siliconcontaining hydroxyapatite (Si-HA) or a silicon-stabilized tricalcium phosphate (Si-αTCP) can be synthesized, depending on the Ca/P, Ca/(P+Si) and Si/P molar ratios.

Abstract: Surface modifications have been progressively applied in order to improve the mechanical, biological and chemical properties of metallic dental and orthopedic implants. Therefore, the novel and multifunctional biocomposites coating matrices, which also consist of local and targeted drug delivery systems, are the most recent applications in the medical field. In this study, gentamicin antibiotic containing HAp bioceramics were utilized in a biodegradable poly-lactic acid thin film matrix which was applied to Ti6Al4V metallic implant surfaces. nanoindentation and scratch test methods were applied. It was observed that, bonding between coating and the substrate is strong enough to be used in implant applications. Additionally, it was observed that the hardness and young modulus values of uncoated Ti6Al4V disc which were 4.3 and 125.2 GPa, respectively. However, under the same testing conditions, it was also observed that the H values (0.6-0.8GPa) and the E (50-60 GPa) values of PLA-HAp biocomposite coated samples are slightly higher than the H values (0.4-0.6 GPa) and the E values (40-50GPa) of only PLA coated sample.

Abstract: Chitosan is a deacetylated derivative of chitin, which is a naturally abundant mucopolysaccharide, supporting the matter of crustaceans, insects, and fungi. Because of its unique properties, such as non-toxicity, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, chitosan has a wide range of applications in various fields. Increasing interest on chitosan’s usage has resulted in high consumption. Therefore, production of chitosan from essential sources with desired characteristics has become an important issue. Several methods, with different chemicals and reaction conditions, have been reported in the literature. This study aimed to shed light in several features of a very promising chitin isolation method described by Tolaimate et al. and its effect on the produced chitosan’s phisico-chemical characteristics.

Abstract: Four rabbits received human derived HA to their left tibias. After 16 weeks bioglass was implanted to their right tibias. After other 16 weeks bone scintigraphies were taken with 99mTc- MDP. Three phase bone scan images showed no evidence of inflammation and superior vascularization rates at implantation sites. In this study, bioglass demonstrated higher uptake of 99mTc-MDP comparing to HA, suggesting a higher vascularization rate and better osseointegration.
