Abstract: As gray balance is very important for color separation and printing quality control, a method based on polynomial regression is proposed to determining the gray balance data in printing process. Firstly the patches on GrayFinder target of GRACoL proof are measured and the L*a*b* values are obtained, then the relationship between L*a*b* and CMY is determined by using the polynomial regression method, at last the different lightness’ corresponding CMY values are found which constitute the gray balance data by using the relationship obtained above. In the experiment, 8 gray patches are used to test the algorithm, and the result shows the average error is 0.969 with the maximal error 2.047 which indicates that the method can be used to find gray balance data.

Abstract: Color difference used to test the quality of printing products is one of the most important factors in the printing industry. Many new color difference formulae such as CIEDE2000, CIEDE94, CMC(l:c) etc were developed to improve the uniformity. In this paper the color difference formulae have been compared throughout their weighting functions SL, SC, and SH to the CIELAB components , , . In order to test which color difference formula has the better performance in the printing industry they are evaluated by our own data sets. First of all, we developed a printing data set for evaluating color difference with psychophysical methods. And the visual color differences of every pairs were obtained. After that the color difference formula mentioned before were evaluated using the data set with the standardized residual sum of squares (STRESS) methods which has better mathematical properties to evaluate the performance of color difference formulae using ΔV and ΔE than PF/3 that cannot indicate the statistical significance of the difference between two color-difference formulae. The result shows that CIEDE2000 and CIE94 color difference formulae are better than CIELAB and CMC. Finally we recommend that the national standards and occupation standards should be updated and CIEDE2000 should be popularized in the printing industry.

Abstract: A linear differential equation is adopted to account for the complexity of honeycomb paperboard properties under static and dynamic conditions. Based on the Laplace transform, honeycomb paperboard is modeled as a linear material with viscoelastic property. The free response of the mass loaded honeycomb paperboard system is expressed as the sum of complex exponentials. The residues and eigenvalues are obtained accurately using the structured nonlinear total least norm(SNTLN) method. A parameters estimation procedure is formulated using a substitution strategy. A experiment system is set up, a series of tests is carried out under different load condition, the free response data of the mass loaded honeycomb paperboard system are recorded and they are used to estimate the parameters. The stiffness coefficients, damping coefficients and viscoelastic coefficients are presented as the function of the load. The model in this work can be used to simulate the response of the mass loaded honeycomb paperboard system under shock condition.

Abstract: The image-to-device gamut mapping algorithm which takes into account the actual image gamut is able to avoid compressing the image gamut more than necessary thereby better preserve the color appearance. In this paper, a new approach to visualize the image gamut based on Ball-Pivoting Algorithm (BPA) is proposed. First we convert a RGB image to CIEL*a*b* color space using the well-known analytical transformations, then we quantize the color points of image to a grid using the discrete CIEL*a*b* color space. At last the color data sets of the image gamut surface are reconstructed based on the BPA. We demonstrate that image gamut can be computed efficiently on practical data sets of images and at the same time gives an accurate approximation of the image gamut. It will helpful to understand the color transformation mechanism and will beneficial to developing the image-dependent gamut mapping algorithms.

Abstract: In reflection to the fact that aluminum paste printing ink has lower gloss and poor masking power in China, it can not meet the requirements of printing production. In this paper, through the surface modification of coated aluminum powder, five kinds of single surfactant were coated on the surface of aluminum powder by wet method in different proportions. The wettability, the floating property and the gloss of the coated aluminum powder were measured, and the influence mechanisms of the surfactants on the wettability and floating property of the aluminum powders and gloss of the aluminum paste printing ink were analyzed as well. The results showed that the wettability of the aluminum powder coated by 1% Oleic acid has the largest decrease, the floating property of the aluminum powder coated by 3% Tween-80 has the largest increase and the aluminum powder coated by 1% Polyvinyl alcohol has the highest gloss. The gloss of the coated aluminum powder increases to 73.8. Modified aluminum paste printing ink has higher gloss and stronger masking, thus can meet the printing requirements for aluminum paste printing ink.

Abstract: In the paper, the spot-color was divided into ten color areas based on the theory of Munsell color system, then, the model samples in IGT was produced according to each color area. After measuring and analyzing the data of the proofs, Gravure spot-color matching based on masking equation by the means of ten color areas was established. Finally, the paper validated the precision of Gravure spot-color matching model by the method of color difference. The functional module of Gravure spot-color matching in the commercial spot-color matching system was developed using C++ programming language and MySQL Database. The running result of spot-color matching software indicated that the Gravure spot-color matching system based on the proposed method is easy to come true by computer programming, and the color difference between matching color and target color is suitable range (△E≤6 ).

Abstract: The realization of the potential of honeycomb paperboard as an important cushion material in packaging has inspired a close scrutiny of its properties. In present work, the force-state mapping technique is successfully applied to the honeycomb paperboard dynamical properties modeling problem. A experiment system is set up to learn the dynamic properties of the honeycomb paperboard. According to the experiment data and the force-state mapping method, the model governing the dynamics of honeycomb paperboard-mass system is established. This model can be used to predict the vibration transmissibility of the system. The comparison of the measured and predicted vibration transmissibility indicates this model can predict the resonance frequency well, the measured resonance altitude is about 20% greater than the predicted altitude, the possible sources of this error is discussed.

Abstract: Considering the fact of low gloss and masking power of aluminum powder, the aluminum powder is chemically modified by wet covering with eight kinds of single surfactants such as Oleic acid, Stearic acid, Sodium dodecyl sulfonate, Sodium stearate, Polyvinyl alcohol, Polyethylene glycol, Tween-80 and Emulsifier-OP in different proportions on the surface of aluminum powder and the gloss of aluminum paste printing ink concocted with the covered aluminum powder is tested. The results show that the gloss of the aluminum powder covered by one percent Polyvinyl alcohol increases most significant. In order to upgrade the gloss of the aluminum paste printing ink, an orthogonal experiment is carried out by choosing four surfactants such as Polyvinyl alcohol as influencing factors and their addition amounts as researched levels. The optimal surface modification formula is obtained based on the experiment. The dosage of surfactant is one percent of the aluminum powder, Sodium dodecyl sulfonate accounts for 25.00% of the total surfactant’s weight, Sodium stearate accounts for 37.50% of the total surfactant’s weight, Tween-80 accounts for 12.50% of the total surfactant and Polyvinyl alcohol accounts for 25.00% of the total surfactant’s weight. The prescription can concoct the commodity aluminum powder and passed 1200 mesh to the aluminum paste printing ink with commodity ink to satisfy the request of relief printing and intaglio printing. The gloss of the printed aluminum paste printing ink reaches 81.3.

Abstract: To reflect the relationship between the trapping effect and colorimetric value of prints, this paper establishes an algorithm to calculate the ink trapping ratio. The new algorithm assumed that the second ink of two-color overprint solid forms an evenly distributed and thinner ink layer by keeping the total ink volume as constant and it employed the transmittance of single solid ink and overprint solid to compute the ratio of the thickness of the second ink layer printed on the first ink layer and on the blank paper on basis of Lambert's law. Because of the difficulties of measuring the transmittance of prints, it used the Clapper-Yule model to calculate them. To evaluate it, the ink trapping ratio computed by the densitometry method and the new algorithm for two sets of two-color overprint solid were adopted to predict the spectral reflectance of them. By comparing the CIELAB color difference between the calculated and measured value of spectral reflectance, the proposed new algorithm is precisely defined and it improves the calculation accuracy of ink trapping.

Abstract: Based on the study of definition of printing production intent with JDF, and the completed study of printing process planning modeling based on polychromatic sets theory, the solution of printing process searching was proposed in this paper. First, the JDF document which includes the Product Node was parsed to acquire the “requirements of printing production in terms of client”. Second, printing order was analyzed to acquire the “requirements of printing production in terms of non-client”. At last, the printing process was calculated with the polychromatic-sets-theory based printing process search algorithm. The printing process searching prototype software was developed by Java, and a print job was analyzed to verify the solution.
