Abstract: This paper will provide the design experience of a linear magnetic gear/generator set that can be incorporated with those slow-motion reciprocating renewable energy sources directly. The tubular system is equipped with one linear magnetic gears set and one linear permanent magnet generator integrated coaxially, and the external mechanical forces can be incorporated to the outer low-speed mover of the system. Through proper magnetic coupling designs, the conveyed electromagnetic energy can be coupled to the internal stator winding coils to produce the desired electric power output. By introducing the detailed three-dimensional finite element analyses and the Taguchi’s method for assisting the system design assessments, a laboratory prototype with 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in length has been developed, and preliminary results showed that a power rating of 220 W can be achieved at a reciprocating frequency of 5 Hz along with an operational stroke of ±2.0 cm.

Abstract: This paper aims to develop a small permanent magnet (PM) synchronous generator for direct-coupled, low-speed wind turbine applications. The generator, rated 3-phase 110 V and 1 kW is designed as an outer rotor structure. The design and optimization of the generator is done with the aid of the electromagnetic field analysis based on the finite element method.

Abstract: This paper presents a 3-phase, 7 kW, 3900 rpm, 4-pole, 12-slot interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous motor for machine tool applications. To reduce the torque pulsations of the initial designed motor, three small circular holes are drilled in the magnetic island, and the Taguchi parameter method coupled with the finite element method (FEM) analysis is employed to minimize the level of cogging torque, torque ripple and magnet volume of the motor. Results from the optimized motor demonstrate that the motor is favorable regarding cogging torque minimization, torque ripple minimization and magnet volume minimization

Abstract: Skewing is one of the most common methods to reduce the cogging torque of permanent magnet synchronous motors. This technique may cause manufacturing troubles such as impossible automatic slot filling due to skewing stator slot. One method to overcome this problem is to use the step twisted stator structure with shifted slot opening. Compared to other methods of skewing, in the presented method, the stator slots are still straight slots and the skewing effect is implemented by shifting slot openings coupled with a step twisted stator design. This paper discusses the use of the step twisted stator structure with shifted slot opening and the associated effects on machine performance. We address the cogging torque, average torque, torque ripple, and back-EMF and its total harmonic distortion (THD). We examine the results using finite element analysis (FEA).

Abstract: This paper presents a permanent magnet synchronous serve motor (PMSSM) to replace an induction motor (IM) in the oil hydraulic system in machine tools to drive a pump for supplying the oil. The proposed is designed to meet not only the machine performance, such as higher average torque per volume of magnet usage and the efficiency, and lower torque ripple, but also the energy-saving policy. The motor is optimized using the fuzzy-based Taguchi method. Finally, the proposed motor is installed in the machine tools for measurement, and compared with the tradition machine tools installed with IM.

Abstract: This paper presents a two-step optimization of shape design for the performance improvement of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor. Results from the optimized motor demonstrate that the motor performs favorably with respect to minimization of torque ripple and maximization of average torque to PM volume ratio.
