Abstract: The biodegradable composites were prepared with the oyster shell particles (OSP) and poly(lactic acid)(PLA) by injection molding. The mechanical and thermal properties were investigated. The degradation temperature of the composites decreased by increasing the content of OSP compared with PLA. From the results of tensile test, the tensile strength and the fracture strain of the composites decreased because of exist of OSP. However, the Young’s moduli of the composites increased compared with PLA. The SEM observation of morphology confirmed that the interface between PLA and OSP had poor adhesion.

Abstract: A series of paraffin /poly (methyl methacrylate) blends were prepared as new kinds of form-stable phase change materials by encapsulation of paraffin into PMMA. The blends were prepared at different mass fractions of paraffin. The form-stable paraffin /PMMA blends were characterized using optic microscopy (OM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Thermal characteristics were measured by using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. On the basis of all results, it was concluded that paraffin is encapsulated by PMMA. The blends have good thermal properties and degrade in two distinguishable steps. They have good energy storage capacity and melt at 58-60 °C.The blends have different degrees of hydrophobic. These form-stable paraffin /PMMA blends have important potential for some practical latent heat thermal energy storage applications.

Abstract: The curing process of self-healing microcapsules containing epoxy resin was studied with different shell material such as Poly (urea-formaldehyde), poly (melamine-urea-formaldehyde), Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by polyvinyl alcohol, and Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by phenol, respectively. The activation energy (ΔE) and the reaction order (n) have been obtained based on Kissinger method, Crane theory and Arrhenius equation. The results showed that: the curing process of epoxy resin as core material in self-healing microcapsules becomes more difficult compared with non-microencapsulated. The stability of shell material impacts on the cure process of core material. The resulting decomposition products of shell materials may participate in the curing reaction. So choosing suitable shell material is particularly important to self-healing microcapsules.

Abstract: The Polygonum Cuspidatum Sieb.et Zucc natural pigments were extracted and compounded with PBS in this paper. The performances of the pigment and the dyed films were studied. The results showed that: both the natural pigment and the dyed films had good thermal stability. Under the acidic conditions, the absorbance of the pigment changed little. The effect to the dyed films by pH indicated the pigments dissolved out of PBS with the degradation. The antibacterial evaluation demonstrated that the natural pigments had good inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The antibacterial properties of the films were not obvious, but it also revealed that the pigment and PBS had the good compatibility.
