Abstract: The cure process and the mechanical properties of liquid polymethylmethacrylate grafted natural rubber (LMG30) modified epoxy have been studied. Addition of LMG30 significantly increased the fracture toughness and the impact strength of the epoxy resin. The fracture toughness increased up to 22 fold (17.3 MNm-3/2) when modified with 5 phr LMG30. The glass transition temperature however, decreases as the rubber content increases. The SEM analysis shows uniform dispersion of rubber particles within the epoxy matrix with average particle size between 0.4 to 0.8 0m in diameter.

Abstract: A new type of polyurethane (PU) has been synthesized by using hydroxyl terminated liquid natural rubber (HTNR) and poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) as a soft segment and toluene-2,4 diisocyanate (TDI) as a hard segment. This PU becomes a biodegradable and recyclable polymer. The PU samples were synthesized by solution polymerization. TDI/PCL polymerization was prepared in order to determine the appropriate NCO:OH ratio which evaluated from the molecular weight of derived PU and the ratios which were able to form a polymeric film. The suitable NCO:OH ratios were 0.84:1 – 1.20:1 and the Mn of the derived PUs was 3000-5500 g/mol determined by using GPC. PU from PCL-HTNR block copolymer was synthesized by varying molar ratio between PCL and HTNR. HTNR has been synthesized by epoxidation reaction and chain cleavage of natural rubber. The Mn of HTNR was in the range of 1700-8000 g/mol. 1H-NMR and FTIR were used to determine the functional group in order to verify the prepared HTNR and PU. Glass transition temperature and thermal decomposition of PU samples were investigated by using DSC and TGA, respectively.

Abstract: The blends of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with natural rubber (NR) at four different blends ratios were prepared via melt blending, with addition of liquid natural rubber (LNR) as compatibilizer. The effect of blend ratio and temperature on the tensile properties and swelling ratio was studied. The addition of NR and LNR into TPU produces a decrease of tensile strength. The swelling ratio increased with the increasing of NR content in the blends. The temperatures of blending also give effects to tensile properties and swelling behavior.

Abstract: Liquid natural rubber (LNR) was used as the toughening agent to overcome the brittleness of epoxy thermoset matrix. The LNR were prepared by using depolymerization method. The experiment was consist of two parts of study, first, epoxy filled with carbon black to get the optimun 15 vol.% content of carbon black (CB). Second, epoxy with various amount LNR and at 15vol.% CB content. This can be seen from the result of flexural properties testing, fracture toughness testing and SEM morphology . The best properties of LNR as toughening as 4 phr because it gave optimun performance compared to others LNR content.
