Abstract: Mechanical spectroscopy was employed to investigate the microstructure evolution of a Zr-modified 6082 Al-Mg-Si alloy and the same alloy with Sc addition after ageing and following severe plastic deformation through equal channel angular pressing. Measurements of the internal friction and dynamic young modulus have been performed in isothermal and isochronal runs in the frequency range 0.1 - 104 Hz. The anelasticity spectra reveal in the temperature range 470-870 K both structural and anelastic relaxation processes. Two structural damping maxima connected with inverse temperature trend of the modulus occur in the alloys submitted to equal channel angular pressing, the first one is strongly suppresed by Sc and Zr addition. An anelastic relaxation peak whose strength depends on the nature and morphology of precipitates and dispersoids and on the deformation and ageing condition was observed in all samples investigated. The high background damping occurring before the first structural damping maximum is analyzed with reference to a superplastic behavior of the equal channel angular pressing processed alloys.

Abstract: Bulk Al6082 alloy is subjected to ECAP using route Bc. This paper focuses on the determination of the anisotropy coefficients and equivalent stress-equivalent strain curve using continuum mechanics equations. Assuming the material to be rigid-plastic, the parameters of the constitutive equation are determined with the aid of measuring the deformation and the uniaxial yield stress during upsetting tests in three perpendicular directions.

Abstract: Aluminium foam sandwich panels (AFS) made of a low-density aluminium alloy AlSi6Cu6 foam core and two dense 6082 alloy face sheets were fabricated, after which the panels were subjected to two different heat treatments. First, the AFS panels were aged to increase their strength without further solution heat treatment and fast quenching, a process which resembles a T5 treatment. Second, to define a reference point the face sheets of AFS samples were cut off the foam and subjected to a full T6 treatment. Hardness profiles were measured across the thickness of the face sheets after the two different treatments and the microstructure was investigated. The main conclusion is that mechanical performance of AFS panels can be considerably increased by heat treatment without full solution heat treatment (T5), but without reaching the level of a full T6 treatment. The potential use of an easy to apply T5 treatment is an important cost reducing factor.

Abstract: This work summarizes the outcome of recent research by the authors on modeling the formation of seam welds in aluminum extrusion and on evaluating the related mechanical properties on the final products. A profile with a seam weld in the middle section was produced with different die designs in order to investigate the relation between die design and local welding parameters, such as contact pressure, temperature, time of contact, strain and strain rate paths. The local welding conditions were evaluated by complete thermo-mechanical 3D FEM simulation of the processes. Specimens were extracted from the profiles and tensile tested, the resulting mechanical properties being discussed with respect to the local welding conditions. The possibility to adopt criteria for assessing the welding quality is discussed, together with the effect of high speed damage cracking.
