Abstract: A four-stage methodological framework useful to analyze the performance of a product development process, with a focus on the information flow inefficiencies is presented. The formal and informal communication exchange between interacting tasks is captured through the Dependency Structure Matrix (DSM) representation, while the properties of the information flow structure are explored calculating metrics of Social Network Analysis (SNA). Information exchange inefficiency of process tasks is calculated performing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA).

Abstract: This paper presents the design of a survey instrument in order to determine the success factors in implementing the end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) management system in Malaysia. Upon reviewing journal articles and research papers previously conducted in automotive recycling, end-of-life vehicles, success factors and green supply chain, a set of preliminary factors was identified. These factors were categorized into seven components, namely the government commitment, stakeholders commitment, resources availability, enforcement and monitoring, education and awareness, market structure and continuous improvement. Thirty items were listed in the questionnaire, where the statements were based on the above said seven factors. Other than that, target respondents and sampling size were also discussed.

Abstract: The papers objective is to present a detailed model of the Advanced Product Quality Planning methodology in the context of the automotive industry. The relations existent between the various inputs and outputs of each planning phase are clearly formulized revealing the intricate web of connections present among them thus facilitating understanding and comprehension of the vast task for both novice and experienced managers. The model can also contain a time and cost analysis of the various activities, concerning a family of products.

Abstract: The paper presents the results of the structure and chemical composition of materials used to manufacture of gear wheel for the automotive industry. Analyzed gear wheel that is a part of one of the mechanical systems of an automotive vehicle was made of sinter Sint-D 32 in the technology of powder metallurgy and alloy structural steel for quenching and tempering 42CrMo4. The cause of the analysis was to research for an alternative material for sinter Sint-D 32 after identified low static strength according to the requirements applicable in the automotive industry. For the analysis were used standard test methods applicable in materials science. Based on microstructure and mechanical properties analysis performed according to requirements applicable in the automotive industry, the research found that steel 42CrMo4 is relevant material to be used in serial production for this particular gear wheel.

Abstract: The presented article deals about hybrid composite materials based on natural fibers and their mechanical testing. It contains test process of composite materials, which contain staple fibers and whole fibers of hemp, cotton, sisal and jute combined with carbon fabric. The objective of the thesis is to confirm or decline the ability of hybrid bio-composites usage in automotive industry following the testing results. Experimental part contains the methods of bio-composites test samples manufacturing and the testing, particularly tensile strength testing and impact test at a bending. The results of this part are statistically evaluated.

Abstract: Lean manufacturing is one of the initiatives that many major businesses in the world have been trying to adopt in order to remain competitive in an increasingly global market. The focus of the approach is on cost reduction by eliminating non-value added activities. Originating from the Toyota Production System, many of the tools and techniques of lean manufacturing have been widely used in discrete manufacturing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the approach of adopting lean, the tools and techniques implemented, the changes in the organizations, the problems encountered as well as the lessons learnt. This paper describes the results and findings of four industrial case studies conducted in different electrical and electronics companies in Malaysia. Interviews were conducted with the key personnel to answer some issues which were crucial in this study. Comparisons and discussion were made among the case companies. One of the key findings obtained is that people in the organization should take the lean mind-set and act in the lean way in order to make a lean initiative successful. The application of kaizen and 7 quality control tools are most popular implementation in the selected case study companies as the tools to eliminate non-value added activities.

Abstract: The Cleaner Production implementation has been expanding significantly in Brazil and there is a strong tendency that companies start to care about environmental issues, such as: input reduction, production process less aggressive to the environment, among other factors inherent to manufacturing process. This paper presents a case study conducted in a company that operates in the field of automotive industry, more specifically in the manufacture of gears for transmissions and diesel engines. The main aims of this research are analyze a machining line focusing on Cleaner Production indicators and evaluate the environmental and economic benefits using the method Material Intensity Factor. The results showed that the company had both environmental benefits and financial gains due to the reduction of raw materials by means of replaced or eliminated material from the production process. The relevant aspect of this study is the possibility of financial gain associated with environmental gains and benefits by means of incremental changes in the production system.

Abstract: In the present financial and economic context, the automotive industry faces new challenges posed by the current crisis. Companies have to ensure that the quality products are delivered on time and in a competitive price. One of the most recommended techniques of quality management by specific standards of the automotive industry for product development is Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP). Product Quality Planning is a structured method of defining and establishing the steps which are necessary to ensure the customer satisfaction from the product. The goal of this paper is to present the results of evaluation of awareness and knowledge the APQP techniques in Polish and Romanian automotive industry. The research method was a questionnaire with indicators to measure the awareness APQP tools. The research was conducted among design and technology professionals in Polish and Romanian automotive companies. On the basis of questionnaire it was performed a comparative analysis of results from Poland and Romania. In this way it is shown which methods and tools of APQP are better known and understood in each country. It was pointed out which tools are difficult to use or there is lack of knowledge about them. It was also shown which methods are most often used in the Polish and Romanian automotive companies. They were also summarized the similarities and differences in the knowledge and using the APQP in both countries.

Abstract: In production processes uncertainty has a great impact on the product quality as well as production costs. In automotive industry the reaming of valve guides in a cylinder head of a combustion engine is a quality determining process. Due to the force fitting of the valve guides into the cylinder head the final reaming process has to deal with increased uncertainty. On the other hand, the finished hole is closely tolerated. To ensure the process reliability the admissible tolerance must be strictly met even in case of uncertainty. This paper presents a possibility to achieve process reliability by a modified process chain with an additional pilot reaming tool. Thereby, the effect of different cutting edge preparation is also analyzed. Further, the influence of the pilot reamer geometry on the final hole quality is investigated.

Abstract: The recent emphasis on car styling caused tolerance requirements for sheet metal parts in the automotive industry to increase. In addition, the new materials (steel and alloy) have a different deviation behavior around the springback after the deep-drawing process. In the early design phases a product can be optimized to fulfill tight tolerance specifications. This work shows the simulation background and the resulting optimization methodology.
