Abstract: A new type of biofilter, the rotating drum biotrickling filter (RDBF) system, was developed and operated to remove styrene from waste gas stream. Porous polyurethane foam sheets were used as a packing material for the RDBF and a pure culture of the Gram-positive bacterium Brevibacillus sp. SP1 was as an inoculum. The reactor showed a short start-up period of 18 days. Once uniform biofilms were developed on the packing, a high and stable removal of styrene over 95 % was observed at an incoming concentration of 200 ppmv and a retention time of 0.5 min. The maximum elimination capacity was estimated to be 125 g/m3/hr. The outstanding performance was attributed to an efficient gas-liquid mass transfer and proper supply of nutrient solution to the packing during the rotation of the drum. However, this performance of the RDBF was not maintained longer than 7 days because of the clogging of the open pores in the polyurethane foam due to an excessive growth of the biofilms. This result indicates that the RDBF has great potential as a gas purification system if a proper method to control the biofilm growth is developed.

Abstract: Workmen for the wastewater treatment advocated wastewater reusing in the conference which the technically development and strategic research of China are main topic.Biofilter is useful as tertiary biofilm reacter.However, it often accrues clogging during cold period and needs frequent backwashing. Backblowing and partial backwashing can slow it. The average flux rised from 2.65 m3/m2.h to 2.84 m3/m2.h. The removal of NH3-N of cocurrent-flow and counter-flow biofilter can be improved. The parameter of partial backwashing depended on the rate of expanding.of counter-flow biofilter.The effect of different backblowing parameters on flux of cocurrent-flow biofilter would be described in this paper. From the parameters studied the bioifiltration time is the most important factor affecting the flux. The results show that the best flux is obtained when backblowing was made for 60s every 12h during 72h where the air pressure was 63 m3/m2.h and water pressure was 25.2 m3/m2.h.

Abstract: Muddy river is the water source for most northern channel irrigation districts in China. Pipe clogging is the main problem to limit development of pipeline delivery irrigation technology in this area. The key to solve the problem is to determine the critical non-deposit flow velocity and the corresponding technologic measures. Based on part achievements of national “863” project, characteristic and operation of northern irrigation district , this paper analyzed the pipe clogging mechanism caused by muddy water and put forward a set of efficient pipe anti-clogging measures, which are confirmed to be practical through the application in a project.

Abstract: this review summarizes an important factor of clogging in subsurface flow constructed wetlands ¬(SSF)—field distribution. The efficiency of filter media and the spatial distribution of biological growth are determined by the flow field distribution directly. If the flow field distribution is un-uniform, it would accelerate the clogging of substrate. The influencing factors for flow field distribution, including hydraulic loads, properties of filter media, filling structures and root distribution were investigated, and the clogging reasons were discussed additionally. At last, this study showed some corresponding research methods, and helping in the process of research and development of subsurface flow constructed wetlands in solving clogging problem.

Abstract: The applied loads have a significant role on the filtration property of soil and geotextile systems. This paper investigates the effects of normal pressure on the clogging behavior of geotextile and gap-graded soil filtration systems. The experimental results show that the clogging potential increases as the normal pressure increases. And a critical value for the normal pressure may exist. When the applied normal pressure is less than the critical value, the normal pressure has significant effects on the filtration systems. However, when the applied normal pressure exceeds the critical value, effects of the normal pressure on the soil-geotextile filtration systems are minor.

Abstract: The accuracy and clogging of microchannels are important for assessing the quality of lab on chip (L-O-C) devices. The clogging affects the fluid mixing efficiency and influences the bonding of substrate. In this paper, inexpensive and quick method for microchannel fabrication in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) while reducing the thermal damage is introduced. Accordingly, the substrate was covered with a thin layer of water during CO2 laser ablation. The effect of water cooling on the clogging formation, heat affected zone and the microchannel geometry in terms of depth and width is investigated. Clogging formation mechanism in the intersection of Y-channel is studied to improve its quality for microfluidics applications. During the experimental work, the CO2 laser power was varied from 2.4 to 6 W at scanning speed from 5 to 12.5 mm/s. The results showed that covering the PMMA substrate with a thin layer of water prevented clogging formation and reduced the heat affected zone.

Abstract: Taking high concentration livestock wastewater as research object, The results showed that the constructed rapid infiltration system operated at the largest hydraulic loading of 0.26m/d, and during the period of the flooding for ond day and drying for two days, the main efficiency of pollutants occurred in filter height of 0.65m, with the maximum removal efficiency of COD and ammonia nitrogen as 80%; TF and MLVSS also reached maximum.

Abstract: A common failure mode for landfills is clogging of the leachate collection system. Based on the studies of clogging about landfill leachate collection system, the influence factors about clog were comprehensively and systematically analyzed .The results show that calcium is the dominant mineral of the dry mass of clog material, and CaCO3 is the main component of the clog. The growth of biomass, minerals precipitation and deposition of suspend inorganic particles are the three major mechanisms for the clogging of LCSs. However, the clogging rate and extend of LCSs is affected by particle size of the granular media, pipe spacing and pipe diameter, filter-separator layer, mass loading, saturated or unsaturated conditions and temperature. These conclusions have profound guiding significance for the design and operation of landfill leachate collection system.

Abstract: More and more constructed wetland CW) were used to treat waste water in the world for its advantage on cheaper and efficiency. CW would clog for improper design or imperfect management, so application for it was limited. The purpose of this paper is that using backwashing method resolve filter media clogging problem which is an intractable matter in constructed wetlands project. The effects of the backwashing treatment on pollutant removal, as well as the influence on characteristics of hydraulics of wetlands, were studied. The experimental results indicate that CW hydraulic conductivity, hydraulic resistance time and removal rate of COD increased after backwashing. This paper confirmed that backwashing method can reverse clogging in vertical-flow constructed wetlands, and provided design guidance for applying backwashing method to treat clogging vertical-flow constructed wetlands.
