Abstract: In this paper the challenges associated with the determination of within section macrostresses in the non-metallic materials porous reactor core graphites, glasses and thermally grown oxides, will be considered, with respect to the length-scale over which such measurements are required. Examples are briefly presented to demonstrate the capability of the methods selected, which include deep hole drilling and photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy. These techniques span the length-scale from micro-metres to tens of millimetres. The measured values will be discussed with respect to the confidence with which these techniques may be applied and hence benefits for life/integrity evaluation.

Abstract: Currently, nearly 1.5 M tons of different types of glassware are produced in Poland, and the majority of it is used as packaging in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. The article presents a method for testing impact resistance of glassware, which was developed at the ITeE-PIB. The authors also present a prototype of a device for glassware tests, discuss a test procedure applied in such tests, and show the results of verification tests for which a high-speed digital camera was used to record the impact strength and the propagation of cracks in glassware. The device in question has been successfully implemented in an industrial research laboratory.

Abstract: Residual stresses significantly influence the strength and lifetime of the glass products, therefore their qualification and quantification during production is basically important for evaluating their probable reliability in application. The current paper aims at introducing a novel procedure of the suggested automatic glass quality test based on instrumented scratch test completed with computer aided image analysis. A special emphasis is put on the problem of limited reproducibility and reliability of the image processing, arisen in the first stage of the research work. The latest results consisting in the development of a new algorithm, providing a more reliable evaluation of the test data will be described.

Abstract: The construction and maintenance of roads in China require large amounts of aggregates and mineral filler. The use of recycled materials helps conserving natural resources. However, the inferior road performance and additional costs have hindered the widespread use of construction and demolition wastes (C&D wastes) in applications such as surface layers of asphalt pavement that may represent a value application for C&D wastes. Waste concrete, waste bricks and waste glass are selected for this study; and the surface layers of asphalt pavement is considered here as value application. Although there is a large potential for supplying C&D wastes now, a few barriers have effectively depressed the recycling activities. Such barriers are described here and a brief discussion suggests ways of their removal.

Abstract: A field-assisted solid state ion exchange (FASSIE) approach is used to dope silicate glasses with mono- and/or multivalent ions, in which the diffusion of ions coming from a film deposited onto the glass surface is driven by an external electric field. Metal precipitation to form nanoparticles may take place during the ion exchange, depending on the process parameters, or it can be induced by irradiation with high power laser beams. Characterization of silicate glass samples doped with either gold or silver is performed by optical absorption and transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract: Soda-lime-silicate glasses in the compositions of (65-x)SiO2-25Na2O-10CaO-xHo2O3 (where x = 0.0, 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00 and 2.50 mol % ) were prepared by melt-quenching technique and characterized. The results show that, the absorption spectra of Ho3+ doped in soda-lime-silicate glass correspond with several bands, which are assigned from the ground state, 5I8 to 3H6 (360 nm), 5G4 (380 nm), 5G5 (417 nm), 5G6 (453 nm), 5F3 (479 nm), 5F4 (538 nm), 5F5 (639 nm), and 5I5 (880 nm). The refractive index and density of glasses were increase with increasing of Ho2O3 concentration. The color of glass samples is light amber with doped Ho2O3 in glass matrix.

Abstract: The absorption characteristics of micro-structural material, such as “black silicon”, aroused extensive attention. In order to understand the impact of the micro-structure, based on Monte Carlo method, the optical simulation is used for absorption characteristics of micro-structural material. In this paper, the body material used for simulation is a kind of glass, BK7, which has been widely used. And, there are a number of 400 structual cells in the model. The bottom square of each cell is fixed to 50×50 µm, and the height of cells is adjustable. For each height, the reflectance, transmittance and absorption of microstructural material can be caculated. Then the relationship between the height and reflectance, transmittance and absorption can be built up. In our simulation, a very complex relationship between the absorption and the the structure of the material is showed. Generally, the absorption increases while the height of microstructual cell increasing.
