Abstract: This study deals with an application of the method of the coefficient of variation in strength prediction of the self-piercing riveted joints. Defined as the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean, the coefficient of variation may be used in both the reliability-based design of self-piercing riveted joints and in the evaluation of existing products. In this study, the concept and definition of the coefficient of variation are stated. The procedure of the use of coefficient of variation for approximate calculations of strength of the self-piercing riveted joints is presented and compared with the classical Taylor expansion method. This is illustrated with a numerical example.

Abstract: Using the measured experimental field data of two faults of a rock slope engineering, based on the large number of measured data analysis results of similar projects and rock style to determine the internal friction angle of the fault.the method of how to choose the good date was given. Back analysis method and number fitting method was used to determine the cohesion of fault; anti-slide pile is the lateral force column, the relation of the four failure modes of anti-slide pile was considered. The statistical parameters of resistance of anti-slide pile was calculated by structure mechnics. The norm recommended coefficient transmission method was used to determine function of random variables of slope sliding. The results show that using back analysis method and structure mechnics method to modify the parameter can decrease the uncertainty and improve the reliability of engineering design .

Abstract: The empirical investigation of the dependence of the statistical characteristics of annual run-off of Primorsky region rivers - modulus of flow, variation coefficient, asymmetry ratio, polymodality degree – on the weighted average values of the soil thermal conductivity coefficients within their watershed areas was carried out. The physico-statistical interpretation of the general form of correlation dependences obtained is provided.

Abstract: Gear is one of the most important and commonly used components in machine system. Early detection of gear damage is crucial to prevent the machine system from malfunction. This paper proposes a method for detection of damaged tooth based on support vector machines. Statistical parameters of standard deviation, root mean square value, maximum value and mean value are extracted from the vibration signal as representative features of tooth conditions to be input to the support vector machine classifier. The validity of the presented method is confirmed by the application of detecting early damaged tooth during the cyclic fatigue test. The vibration acceleration on gear box is acquired as original data. Furthermore, the signal of each gear tooth is separately extracted from the signal for a further analysis.The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Characters Segmentation is one important step in the Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system. This paper proposed an improved method for one-row & two-row of Vietnam license plates (LP) characters segmentation. The proposed method consists of two main modules: the first task is pre-processing (image quantization, normalized image, adjust horizontal contours, morphology opening to remove noises), the second task is characters segmentation based on the method named peak-to-valley in order to segment the pictures in digit images getting the two bounds of the each digit segment according to the statistical parameter. We tested for 600 Vietnam LP (300 one-row LP, 300 two-row LP), the average rate of accuracy of our method is 98.03%.

Abstract: To investigate the effect of design parameters with statistical characteristics on ballistics performance, sensitivity analysis of the flight range objective with respect to relevant parameters was conducted to demonstrate it. Statistical parameters were modeled using an iterative method in order to determine descriptive statistics for further sampling. Simulation of flight range based on a dynamics model was then carried out. Finally, sensitivity derivatives from the baseline design scheme were calculated to locate the most sensitive parameters which can be controlled specially for better performance. Results show that by sensitivity analysis, thrust parameters affect the flight range objective obviously while others not, which provides suggestions about whether some parameters should be limited in a range or not.

Abstract: The coming national specification for steel highway bridge will adopt the design method of probability limit state based on the structure reliability theory. Then the statistical parameters of loads and resistance play a key role in this method. Based on the extensive survey and investigation on site, the parameters of resistance are calculated in the study. In the work, three aspects of resistance’s uncertainty which are the uncertainty of materials properties, geometric parameters of members and calculation model are analyzed respectively. Then, the statistical parameters of five typical members of two commonly used steels—Q235q and Q345qD—in steel highway bridges are calculated. The recommended statistical parameters of resistance of steel highway bridge can be a reference for the new specification.
