Abstract: This paper proposes a simple and convenient numerical simulation approach to examining the characteristics and machining capacity of the manufacture process to machine a front face circular groove on a multi-tasking machine tool by a side milling cutter with special structure. In the second part of the paper, the practicability of the process to machine a groove with rectangular sectional profile is discussed based on the simulation results, and then an improved process is developed for correctly machining the groove profile in the required shape. Furthermore, the effect of cutter feed motion on the profile precision of machined groove is studied; at the same time, a main disadvantage of the process as a finishing cutting method is also identified.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a systematic dry hobbing experiment performed on a general mechanical transmission type of hobbing machine. All four types of coated HSS hobs demonstrate satisfactory cutting performance applicable enough to practical production. Some related details such as the characteristics of hob wear, the effect of chip crush behavior and cutting speed are also discussed based on the experiment results.

Abstract: In this paper, the authors discuss the influence of touch trigger probe system on CMM measurement performance based on measurement experiment results. A ring gage and a plug gage finished in high accuracy are employed as test pieces and the measurements performed under the conditions of combining different extension bar and approaching speed. Two main types of errors, periodic component and high frequency undulation, are verified. Introduction of the extension bar may significantly aggravate the accuracy and reliability, especially, associated with a comparatively large approaching speed. In addition, from the discussions on the generation mechanism of the periodic error and high-frequency undulation, some worthwhile references to engineering applications are also derived.

Abstract: The degree is an important parameter for B-spline. In this paper, as one example of optimal design in mechanism, the optimal design of the cam curve to control the residual vibration of the follower output for an indexing cam mechanism is taken and the effect of the degree of the B-spline to describe the cam curve on the optimization performance is discussed by obtained results.

Abstract: This paper explains the results of a systematic dry hobbing experiment performed on a general mechanical transmission type of hobbing machine. The HSS hobs with different combinations of coat materials and coating states display significant variations in tool life. A TiN coating hob demonstrates the best cutting performance although the coating cost is the lowest. Furthermore, some meaningful discussions related to the dry hobbing mechanism are also presented.

Abstract: Aiming at the complex design and analysis methods of noncircular bevel gear, combining the gear space engagement theory and the generating method of tooth profile, the profile generating process was seen as the pure rolling between the pitch line of virtual processing tool and pitch curve of oval bevel gear based on the virtual generating method. The blank parameters and relation equation between tool parameters and procedure parameters of generating method were deduced. General parametric solid models of oval bevel gear were founded. Based on experimental result of oval bevel gear transmission, the design profile of oval bevel gear which was obtained according to generating method was verified.

Abstract: This paper presents a simulation approach for estimating the trajectory error of a linear interpolation cutter path produced by the numerical control Acc/Dec motion characteristics for a MC. The algorithm is very simple and efficient for simulation calculation. Through comparing the machined profiles of workpiece with the calculated cutter path trajectories, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is sufficiently demonstrated.

Abstract: This paper proposes an optimal interpolation approach to generate cutter paths in the
form of polar coordinate for machining noncircular contours. The cutter path obtained with the
approach consists of a series of Archimedes’ spiral segments and the number of segments is the
fewest under the condition that the interpolation error completely satisfies the specified limit value.
It can be also evidenced that the profile error of the machined contour due to the cutter path is
perfectly controlled within the specified interpolation accuracy limit. The result of applying the
approach to the contour machining of a disc cam sufficiently illustrates the effectiveness of the
proposed approach.
