Abstract: The low cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of Q235 steel under mean strain control has been investigated. A serious of the strain controlled cyclic loading experiments with several combinations of strain amplitudes and mean strains have been performed. Significant cyclic hardening and mean stress relaxation were observed in all cases. Fractography by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine the LCF failure mechanisms and fatigue crack propagation modes of the Q235 steel.

Abstract: High temperature low cycle fatigue behaviour of cast nickel-based superalloy Inconel 738LC in as-received condition and coated with an Al-Si diffusion layer was studied. The Al-Si protective layer was deposited on the gauge section of cylindrical specimens using the slurry technique. Fatigue tests were performed on cylindrical specimens under total strain control in symmetrical cycle at 800 °C in air. The coating has a beneficial effect on fatigue life in the low amplitude domain. The stress response of the coated material is higher for high amplitudes in comparison with the uncoated one. Fracture surfaces and sections parallel to the specimen axis have been examined to study fatigue damage mechanisms.

Abstract: The fatigue behaviour of materials is usually synthesised in terms of stress-life (S-N) curve or in terms of strain-life (e-N) curve, the latter being described by the so-called Manson-Coffin equation. It is known that the assumption of equality of the plastic and elastic components between the Manson-Coffin and the stabilised stress-strain curves leads to the so-called compatibility conditions which connect the equations theoretically. The material constants of the Manson-Coffin and of the stabilised stress-strain curve are commonly determined by best fitting separately the experimental data obtained from strain-controlled fatigue tests. As a consequence the compatibility conditions may not be fulfilled. In this paper a method for fatigue data analysis that ensures the compatibility conditions is proposed and validated against experimental data.

Abstract: Smooth specimens made from austenitic-ferritic duplex steel were subjected to constant stress amplitude loading with positive mean stresses. Hysteresis loops were recorded during the fatigue life and plastic strain amplitude and cyclic creep rate were determined. Fatigue hardening/softening curves, cyclic creep curves and cyclic stress-strain curves for different positive mean stresses were evaluated. Typical dislocation structures developed in both phases of the duplex steel were identified using TEM, compared with the saturated plastic strain amplitude and correlated with the decrease of the cyclic creep rate during cycling and the slope of the cyclic stress-strain curve.

Abstract: Cylindrical specimens of cast polycrystalline nickel base superalloy Inconel 738LC were cyclically strained under total strain control at 23 and 800 °C to fracture. Cyclic hardening/softening curves, cyclic stress-strain curves, and fatigue life curves were obtained at both temperatures. Surface relief was studied in specimens fatigued to failure using scanning electron microscopy. Cyclic hardening/softening behaviour depends both on temperature and strain amplitude. Low amplitude straining was characterized by saturation of the stress amplitude. In high amplitude straining a pronounced hardening was found which was followed by saturation at room temperature and by cyclic softening at 800 °C. The cyclic stress-strain curves can be fitted by power law. They are shifted to lower stresses with increasing temperature. Fatigue life curves can be approximated by the Manson- Coffin and Basquin laws. The Manson-Coffin and Basquin curves are shifted to lower lives with increasing temperature. Slip markings were detected on specimen surface at all test temperatures. When temperature grows the density of slip markings is reduced.

Abstract: Recently, most of fatigue cracks in ship structures are reported within a few years after delivery. This type of fatigue characteristics cannot be explained adequately by the S-N curve based on high cycle fatigue. Calculation results under critical loading conditions reveal that stress magnitude higher than three times the yield stress occurs at some critical locations. It shows the fatigue cracks are related to low cycle fatigue. But the existing recommended design procedures in maritime industry do not properly cover low cycle fatigue problems. This work represents the first step in an effort to develop a design code that addresses low cycle fatigue problems. Low cycle fatigue test for uniform round specimen made of base/weld metal and for cruciform welded joint are carried out under constant amplitude alternating load, controlled by strain. Strain-cycle curves for the base metal and weld joints show good agreement with published data as well as some code recommended design curves.
