Abstract: Throughout history till today, earthquake prevention and disaster mitigation has been the eternal subject in engineering field. Security is the very premise for the subsistence and development of human beings. Entrusted with government correlation department, the examination of seismic safety and structural health diagnosis will be done in relation to the type, characteristic feature and damage, etc. of current masonry structure in Minnan District, which is in the spirit of “Emphasis on hedge against disaster relief”. According to current criteria as well as considering the actual situation of construction, various constructions will be evaluated scientifically by the on-the-spot survey, investigation, evaluation and analysis, from which get the various morbid state and principle of constructions in concordance with the differences of severity. On the other hand, in line with “rescuing” principle in order of importance and urgency, corresponding classification of disaster prevention and certain applicable and practical disposal ideas will be put forward in order to provide references for engineering practice and application as well as management and policy making for relevant department.

Abstract: Malaysia is considered as a very low seismic region country. However countries that border Malaysia such as Indonesia and Philippines are the two most seismically active countries with frequent earthquakes. The close proximity of these countries means that Malaysia is prone to risk of distance earthquakes. As such, anticipated problem associated with earthquakes must be dealt with. There is several problems expected need to be justified in this disaster phenomenon. Area of higher risk to be affected by earthquake need to be identified. To date, many building in Malaysia are not designed to withstand seismic load which means that they are susceptible to collapse in the event of earthquakes. School buildings contain large numbers of public user during most of the times. A sustainable approach of visual assessment and detailed analysis are needed to ensure the school building sustainability towards an earthquake threat. An ATC-21 evaluation and a finite element analysis were performed on a 4 storey standard school building in order to evaluate its performance should it be subjected to seismic waves. Results from the analysis were used to compare with the structures actual capacity and a potential improvement to the building can be identified. The assessment methods engaged no destructive in-situ test and the cost involved in the assessment are kept to a minimum. The final outcome of the study produces a guideline and database that served as a potential maintenance proposal and reference for engineering community in the future.

Abstract: In recent years, lots of urban disasters have happened in China. All these disasters caused damage to economic growth and tremendous effect on people's lives. This paper aims to search for effective methods of urban disaster prevention and mitigation. Through investigation and induction, the paper summarized definition of urban disaster and destructions to city. Finally, the paper put forward some suggestions to disaster prevention and mitigation. The research will contribute to disaster prevention and mitigation in city, and it is conducive to establishment of comprehensive disaster prevention system.
