Abstract: Relationship between the macroscopic and local strains of porous metals is examined by microstructural observation. Open-cell porous titanium with 60% porosity was compressed up to 30% macroscopic strain at room temperature. Open-cell porous nickel with 95% porosity was compressed up to 40% macroscopic strain at room temperature. Local strains in cell walls of both porous titanium and nickel were evaluated by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). Absolute value of the local strain increased with increasing the macroscopic strain and it is smaller than that of macroscopic strain. In addition, the value of the local strain at the cell junctions was larger than that of the center of cell struts.

Abstract: During the Yuzhen palace of Wudang mountain integral lifting project, the writer tests the mechanical performance of H-section steel reaction column in the case of initial small eccentricity. The writer gathers and analyzes the strain data of H-section steel reaction column, including the local strain and local strength, load - displacement relationship of H-section steel reaction column in different lifting pressure. The results show that the local strain and local strength, load - displacement change present a curve of H-section steel reaction column increase trend with the lifting pressure and initial eccentricity increase. But the whole stress reaction column is in the permitted range. It could provide reference for the reaction structure choosing in the lifting engineering.

Abstract: The local elastic and plastic strain during deformation are very complicated and different form the macroscopic strain, because most materials have inhomogeneous microstructure. In this study, local strain distribution in three dimensions has been measured using the new developed method based on image analysis in high-resolution synchrotron radiation computed tomography (SR-CT). Model and practical specimens, which made of cupper alloy and aluminum alloy, respectively, were prepared for a development procedure and application of local strain measurements. Gauging intervals of microstructural features before and after deformation gave us information of inhomogeneous local strain distribution in three dimensions. High strain was observed in a necking region appeared after tensile deformation in the model sample. A combination of non-destructive measurements by SR-CT and three-dimensional analysis revealed inhomogeneous strain distributions in practical aluminum samples.

Abstract: A tracking procedure for the high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been developed in order to measure 3-D local strain within a deforming material in high-density. A dispersion-strengthened copper alloy model sample with alumina particles, which contains micropores, was visualized by the synchrotron radiation CT. The pores observed in reconstructed CT volumes were used as tracking markers. The developed tracking method using a set of matching parameters, which classifies matched, pended and rejected markers, exhibited high ratio of success tracking. Furthermore, the ratio was improved by applying the spring model method, which is one of the particle image velocity (PIV) methods utilized in the field of the fluid mechanics, to the pended markers. The method based on the image analysis of CT imaging volumes provides us 3-D high-density strain mapping.

Abstract: Based on the relationship between quantified blurring degree of Kikuchi bands obtained by an electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) technique and macroscopic strains measured by a strain gauge, the local compression strain SEBSD in sinter ore has been evaluated under various conditions. There is a good linear relationship between the SEBSD and the strains measured by a strain gauge. The local strain SEBSD evaluated by EBSD patterns can be used as an index of local strains.

Abstract: We surveyed literature and proposed a procedure to identify the fatigue properties from the Brinell hardness and Young’s modulus. And we developed a parameter similar to the S.W.T. parameter with the Brinell hardness and Young’s modulus. Using the parameter and finite element analyses, we evaluated fatigue lives of four kinds of welded joints. The predicted results are in a good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract: We have developed a new convenient tool for local stress and strain analysis in the scanning electron microscope. It is based on the Kossel diffraction, physical phenomenon that is known for a long time because of its high accuracy for lattice constant determination in micron regions. The pattern is recorded on a CCD camera allowing a fast and reliable analysis. This technique has been applied to several materials. In-situ tensile tests were performed on a shape memory alloy. During loading, we observe clearly a shift of Kossel lines on the diagram, whose magnitude depends on the (hkl) crystallographic planes. The stress can be deduced from the diffracting plane strain measurement using a single crystal stress analysis.
