Abstract: Transparent titania coating was formed onto a flexible polycarbonate plastic substrate by low-temperature fabrication process below 100 °C consisting of a sol-gel technique and a hot water treatment method. The titania coating with high transparency showed a good photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation. Palladium metal acts as a catalyst for dissociative adsorption of hydrogen gas at room temperature under an atmospheric pressure. The palladium catalyst was deposited on the photocatalytic titania coating by a photodeposition process at room temperature under UV-light irradiation. The flexible polycarbonate plastic sheet with semitransparent palladium-deposited titania coating works as an optically readable hydrogen gas sensor which can operate at room temperature.

Abstract: The present research work describes deposition of titania onto Fe powder using a homemade fluidized bed CVD reactor and titanium tetrachloride as the precursor. The as-deposited particles were examined in terms of microstructure and magnetic behavior by means of SEM, XRD, FTIR and VSM. It was realized that high quality TiO2 deposition onto iron particles was possible. The produced thin films were microcrystalline and homogenous, with the optimum conditions being in the range of 800-900 OC and a TiCl4:air ratio equal to 1:15-1:25.

Abstract: In the present study, titanium (Ti) samples were surface-modified by titania (TiO2), silica (SiO2) and hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings using a sol-gel process. The bioactivity of the film-coated Ti samples was investigated by cell attachment and morphology study using human osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells. Results of the cell attachment indicated that the densities of cell attachment on the surfaces of Ti samples were significantly increased by film coatings; the density of cell attachment on HA film-coated surface was higher than those on TiO2 and SiO2 film-coated surfaces. Cell morphology study showed that the cells attached, spread and grew well on the three kinds of film-coated surfaces. It can be concluded that the three kinds of film coatings can bioactivate the surfaces of Ti samples effectively. Overall, Ti sample with HA film-coated surface exhibited the best bioactivity.
