Abstract: β-sialons prepared from pyrophyllite resp. kaoline were used for investigation of corrosion resistance in aluminium, NaF-AlF3 and NaCl-KCl mixture. The results were compared with β-sialon of similar composition, prepared from commercial powders. The differences in corrosion process of β-sialon prepared from natural hydrosilicates and synthetic powders are discussed.

Abstract: Environmental-assisted subcritical crack growth on two different /-sialon ceramics is determined in static fatigue tests. The goal of these investigations was to determine the influence of delivering medium of high pressure pumps on their durability (life cycle). Therefore 4-point-bending bars were statically loaded in distilled water and subcritical crack growth was analyzed. The large number of spontaneous failure and survivals made the development of a modified testing procedure necessary in order to obtain a significant database.

Abstract: The dielectric properties of -SiAlON and various cations doped -SiAlON bulk ceramics prepared by a hot-press method were investigated. The dielectric properties (dielectric constant and tangent loss) were characterized by a post-resonator method (Hakki-Coleman method) at room temperature in the microwave frequency range. The effect of z-values about -SiAlON was examined, and also the effects of various interstitial cations on dielectric properties of -SiAlON were studied. Dielectric properties of -SiAlON were compared with those of Si3N4 and -SiAlON and their relationship between the dielectric properties and the cationic species of SiAlON were discussed.

Abstract: -SiAlON with various z-values (z = 0.5~4.0) were produced by hot pressing. The dielectric properties (dielectric constant and tangent loss) of -SiAlON were characterized by the post-resonator method at room temperature and by the perturbation method from room temperature to 1200 oC at 2.45 GHz, respectively. Effect of z-values and temperatures with -SiAlON were investigated.

Abstract: The high-temperature deformation of dense nano-sized Ca-α SiAlON and submicron- sized β-SiAlON polycrystals were investigated by compression tests. These polycrystals were fabricated from Ca-α SiAlON and β-SiAlON nano powders respectively, and contained almost no intergranular glass phase. Both SiAlONs exhibited large plastic deformations with the stress exponent n ~1 in the higher stress region, and n ~2 in the lower stress region. Shear-thickening creep (n < 1), which has been reported in liquid contained SiAlONs, was not observed.

Abstract: β-SiAlON powder was used as a raw powder to fabricate α/β-SiAlON composite ceramics with different rare earth elements. The phases present in the sample fabricated from -SiAlON, α-Si3N4, AlN, and rare earth oxide powders were - and -SiAlONs. The composition was dependent on the chemical composition and firing profile. The sample obtained by adding Yb2O3 had a high -SiAlON content. The /-SiAlON composite ceramics had high densit. Their microstructures depended on the used metal oxides, namely, the addition of Nd2O3 and CaCO3 resulted in the elongation of the -SiAlON grains. The bending strength, fracture toughness, and hardness were influenced by the -SiAlON content, amount of elongated grains, and density of the sample.

Abstract: In order to prepare translucent sialon more easily, LiF was used as a non-oxide sintering additive to lower the sintering temperature to ≤1650 °C. The present work shows that the sintering process has a strong effect on microstructure and property of α-sialon.

Abstract: This paper is focussed on the development of microstructure during crystallisation heat treatment of B-phase parent glasses with composition (e/o) 35R:45Si:20Al:83O:17N, where R = Er, Yb, Y or a mixture of Y and Yb. Extensive high resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy has shown that the lenticular B-phase crystals take up a substantial range of composition. The element R is always clearly anti-correlated with the Si, and a larger R3+ cation radius moves the composition range to lower R contents. It is suggested that a locally increased density in the bi-dimensional network of randomly oriented (Si,Al)(O,N)4 tetrahedra is associated with an increased density of vacancies in the R3+ cation lattice.

Abstract: Effects of plasma etching on mixed /-sialon ceramics with different /-ratiowere investigated. A mix of CF4/O2 in a ratio of 2:1 was chosen as reactive gas. Parameters such as etching time and the material composition were examined. It was shown that -grains exhibit a larger etching rate than the grain boundary glassy phase or the -grains, generating pockets in a range of few µm. The so created surfaces were characterized both by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by atomic force microscopy (AFM) in contact mode. These complementary techniques also enabled the determination of the bearing ratio.

Abstract: In the present study, interactions between AlN and SiAlON laminated couples were investigated after gas pressure (GPS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX) with the aim to produce laminated composites. In the laminated couples sintered by GPS, a significant reaction zone (~100-150 μm), containing a high aspect ratio of elongated polytypoid grains, was observed at the interface. However, in the case of laminated couples sintered by SPS, a considerably thin reaction region (~2-3 μm) was observed, elongated polytypoid grain formations were also detected.
