There are several observations that the grain boundary structure is influenced by the chemistry of additives, e.g., clean grain boundaries without an amorphous intergranular film (IGF) were observed in the SiC sintered with Sc2O3-AlN, crystallized boundaries were observed in the SiC sintered with Lu2O3-AlN and grain boundaries with an amorphous IGF were observed in the SiC sintered with Y2O3-AlN [6,7]..
Thus, the interfacial debonding for toughening and softening of the boundary phase at high temperatures were influenced by the chemistry of sintering additives.
