Introduction Dikes are amongst the world's oldest hydro engineering structures.
This fact often leads to the erroneous supposition that the long history of this type of construction contributes to progress in this particular field of civil engineering, which should logically have certain superiority over other younger branches of the science, for example, hydroelectric works.
Drawing knowledge from dam engineering leads, as with most problems, to an excessively perfectionist view of their solution; this results in a substantial increase in construction costs.
