New Strength Criterion Based on Relationship between Elastic and Plastic Strains You Li School of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Central South University, Changsha, 410075, China yli@mail.csu.edu.cn Keywords: elastic strain, plastic strain, e-p curve, strength criterion Abstract.
Introduction Strength theory or criterion has been playing an important role in engineering, but its progress has been slow because of its complexity, which can be seen from the development course of the 4 major strength theories[2-3]: Galileo’s rudimentary concept of the first strength criterion in 1638 was not fully expounded until Rankine in his Applied Mechanics Handbook in 1858; the second strength criterion, from Mariotte’s tension fracture concept in 1682, underwent Poncelet’s maximum strain hypothesis, until Saint-Venant in 1856 suggested that the maximum strain be used as the material ultimate strength for design purposes; the third strength criterion went through the Coulumb Criterion in 1773, the Tresca Criterion in 1864, and Guest’s maximum shear stress theory in 1900; the fourth strength criterion underwent the Huber’s Distortion Energy Criterion in 1904, the Mises’s yield circle equation in 1913, and in 1937 Nadai set forth the octahedral shear stress theory.
In addition, all of ,and here are engineering strains (In other places without explanation it can be thought to be tensors).

Introduction As the unique properties and numerous advantages in practical applications such as fine workability of fresh concrete and the high durability, high-strength and volume stability, high-performance concrete (HPC) has been widely used in more and more important civil engineering project such as bridges, high-rise buildings, port construction, and so on [1], and become the important subject in concrete research over the last decade [2].
In order to promote the application of high- performance concrete for structural purpose, the material must be engineered to show adequate strength, ductility or a combination of both.
