The microstructure obtained in welding of steel can be affected by a large number of factors; the most notable among them are the weld metal chemistry (which in turn is dictated by the base metal composition, filler metal composition, the slag-metal reaction and gas-metal reaction), the cooling rate (largely dictated by the process parameters) and any other pre and post weld heat treatments done.
The microstructure needs to be evaluated for its phase composition, grain size, structure & shape as well as any evidence of microsegregation and other defects.
