Introduction Lattice distortion in crystalline materials is generally due to the presence of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs), with elastic strains commonly assumed to play a relatively minor role.
It is particularly useful in geology where there is much uncertainty over possible dislocation types, but is applicable to any material since it involves no assumptions other than that the elastic strains are negligible.
