Introduction Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are increasingly being used for a wide range of applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, owing to their superior physical and mechanical properties relative to weight over traditional materials such as steel and aluminium (CFRP is ~70% and 40% lighter respectively) while being only ~20% more expensive [1].
The fixation of the composite material laminate is made as shown in Fig. 1(b).

PREFACE The XXII International Materials Research Congress (IMRC) was held in Cancun Mexico from 11 to 15 August 2013.
It was organized by the Sociedad Mexicana de Materiales (SMM) and the Materials Research Society (MRS).
The aim of the IMRC is provide an interactive forum to discuss and exchange ideas about the advances in synthesis, characterization, properties, processing, applications, basic research trends, corrosion prevention, and more, all related to the area of materials science and engineering.
This special volume of Materials Science Forum contains selected papers presented in this symposium.
Finally, but not least, we would like to thank all the authors for their valuable contributions to the journal.

Most of these have been confined to isotropic materials solid beams [2-6], for example.
On the other hand, the amount of work carried out on thin-walled beams made of composite materials has been rather limited.
