The dopant effect in Al2O3 has been previously explained from formation of second phase particles at grain boundaries [16], but more recent data reveals that the dopant effect is mainly caused by segregation of the dopant cation in the vicinity of grain boundaries [9,17]; both conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM) analyses revealed that Al2O3 doped with small amount of oxide is a single phase material without any second phase.
The reduction in the creep rate is related to increase in activation energy for creep deformation [19].
However, recent systematic studies for the lanthanoid doped Al2O3 revealed that the reduction in the creep strain rate is not in the same order as increasing ionic size of dopant cation [10,18].
