Poor toughness in thermosetting matrix composites often leads to the premature failure of the materials under Mode I (interlaminar tension or peel) or Mode II (interlaminar shear) loading.
However, in the composites, this increase reduces to about 2-fold and 3-fold, respectively, showing that toughness of the matrices do not completely transfer to improvement of fracture toughness of the composite materials.
