Introduction Size effect is the basic characteristics of brittle materials and quasi-brittle materials.
Bažant and et al. [1] proposed some theories about size effect of brittle materials strength, and pointed out that size effect exist in the studying mechanics property of brittle materials by discrete element method (DEM).
DEM has its own advantage in simulation the mechanics property of brittle materials that can simulate the large deformation and the formation and propagation of cracks [3].

It tells us that material with small size has relatively good level, relatively large density, its strength is relatively high.
Level of shear strength for the 3 groups of sand is as follows: less than 0.225mm sand > greater than 0.335mm sand > 0.225-0.335mm sand, material with small particle size has relatively good group, relatively large density and relatively higher strength.
