The materials in this state can be treated as gap medium.
When reaching a certain degree of compaction, it can suppose that the total volume of materials is approximate constant.

This 3-dimensionality yields a material with mechanical and physical properties that are superior to either the metal or ceramic individually.
However, the traditional approaches to making these composites usually results in materials with microstructures consisting of discrete and dispersed phases embedded in an otherwise homogeneous matrix material - leading to problems with obtaining a high enough content of the reinforcement phase.
The optimum composite would consist of 3-dimensionally interpenetrating phases throughout the structure raising the possibility of developing materials with truly multifunctional properties; each phase contributing its own characteristics to the macroscopic behaviour of the composite.

Rees [5] referred to the EF as the ‘appropriated carrying capacity’, and biocapacity (BC) is defined as the carrying capacity of local ecosystems to produce useful biological materials and to absorb waste materials generated by humans.
For example, Senbel [29] examined several scenarios for human consumption, ecological productivity and material efficiency to explore which variables would have an influence on the ecological budget of North America over the coming century.
