Due to the pure and stable composition, direct reduction iron (DRI) is considered to be the perfect material for electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking. [1] As EAF steel output growing and the high quality scrap supply is seriously insufficient, the demand for DRI will grow continuously in the world.

The data for the design variables is obtained from literature [4]
A shell-and-tube exchanger with the following geometry was used [8]:
Ds = shell diameter = 0.635m
Do = tube outside diameter = 0.019m
Di = tube inside diameter = 0.016m
L = tube length = 4.88m
s = tube spacing 0.024m, triangular
B = baffle spacing = 0.241m
There is one tube-side and two shell-side pass, and the tube material is stainless steel with a thermal
conductivity of 10 W/ (m) (K)
Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient for this heat exchanger under the following service
conditions [8]:
Tube Side
Liquid undergoing sensible-heat transfer:
Wt = flowrate = 500,000 kg/h c = specific heat = 0.5 KJ/(kg)(K)
µ = viscosity = 1.21 cP
specific gravity = 0.8
k = thermal conductivity = 0.075 W/ (m) (K)
Shell Side
Liquid undergoing sensible-heat transfer:
Ws = flowrate = 200,000 kg/h
c = specific heat = 1.0 KJ/(kg)(K)
µ = viscosity = 2 cP
specific gravity = 1.0

China's steel production growth is mainly driven by the extensive production, especially small and medium-size steel companies who use a lot of iron ore for the production of crude steel, steel billets and other low-end products, which cause low profits, high energy consumption, pollution and raw material waste.

The present paper, summarizing studies carried out within last years at the Research Center of Mechanics of Materials and Structural Reliability-CEMSIG ([5-8]), from the Department of Steel Structures and Structural Mechanics, is intended to provide some new evidence on the previous FEMA 277 conclusions.
The material in members and connections is S355 structural steel.
For the full-scale AEM models, same properties were adopted (meshing, material properties, acceptance criteria).
