To overcome the limitation of the monolithic piezoelectric ceramic, piezoelectric
composites have been studied in recent years. 1-3 piezoelectric composites, which combine the
advantages of both the ceramic and matrix phases, is the most popular material in transducer and
actuator application. [3],[4] But the sensors and actuators used in smart mechanical systems may not
have good compatibility with civil engineering structures. [5,6] 1-3 cement based piezoelectric
composites, in which cement paste has been used as the passive matrix, have good compatibility with
civil engineering structures because of the acoustic impedance of the composite could be adjusted to
be compatible with concrete structures.
