Abstract: The deposition of hydroxyapatite coatings on titanium via sputtering techniques has been quite studied on commercial dense substrates, for use as a biomaterial. In this work, porous titanium samples produced by powder metallurgy and commercially dense titanium sheet, used as control, were used as substrates. The coatings were deposited by radio frequency magnetron sputtering using a hydroxyapatite target in argon atmosphere with different deposition times. Samples characterization was performed by Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and low-angle X-ray Diffraction. Hydroxyapatite coating depositions were obtained on both titanium substrates. The results indicated the potential of this methodology for titanium substrates with homogeneous hydroxyapatite coatings.

Abstract: Nanocomposite thin films composed of a TiO2 matrix doped with noble metals nanoparticles (MNPS), Au and Ag, were deposited on Si (100) and glass substrates by dc magnetron sputtering. The samples were annealed in a protective atmosphere at temperatures ranging from 200 to 700 °C. The main goal of this work is to characterize and compare the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) behaviour in both systems. The studies have been focused on the growth of the nanoclusters and on their role on the optical properties of the films. Size, shape and distribution of the nanoclusters embedded on the titanium oxide dielectric matrix are reported as key factors on the SPR behaviour in both systems (Au:TiO2 and Ag:TiO2). The MNPs grew due to diffusion mechanisms, which were led by the annealing treatments, even at the highest annealing temperatures. Evidences of the correlation between the nanocomposite film structural changes and the evolution of the optical properties due to the SPR activity are reported. The SPR phenomenon manifests itself as a wide band on the visible range on the absorption spectra, and it is confirmed by an important change on the surface colour tones of the samples.

Abstract: In this work, Si-doped DLC films were deposited on stainless steel (316SS) and polycarbonate (PC) substrates by RF-PACVD in gas mixtures of SiH4+CH4, with 2, 5 and 10 vol.% SiH4. The increase of the Si content in the films led to a progressive drop in the hardness from 30 GPa down to 23 GPa whereas the elastic modulus increased from 124 GPa up to 146 GPa, as measured in the SS coated substrates. In the case of coated PC samples pop-in was observed in the loading curve which was interpreted by finite element simulation and nanoscratching techniques.

Abstract: The aim of the present work is to study the influence of the partial substitution of Si by Ge on the formation of the apatite-type La9.33Si2Ge4O26 phase by mechanical alloying and subsequent annealing. Powders of La2O3, GeO2 and SiO2 were dry milled in a planetary ball milling at increasing rotation speeds of 150, 250 and 350 rpm and milling times up to 50 h. The resulting mixtures were subsequently annealed at increasing temperatures up to 1100 °C. Single phase apatite-like La9.33Si2Ge4O26 was obtained during mechanical alloying at high rotation speed. The higher the rotation speed the lower was the time required for the lanthanum germanosilicate phase formation. For the samples in which complete reaction between initial phases did not occur during milling, La9.33Si2Ge4O26 was always obtained during the annealing process. The more severe was the mechanical alloying process the lower was the annealing temperature required for the apatite phase formation. The formation of apatite phase during mechanical alloying did not provoke significant changes in densification behavior of the milled samples. The addition of GeO2 as raw material promotes a faster formation of the apatite phase as compared to the results obtained using only La2O3 and SiO2.

Abstract: Tungsten oxynitride films (WOxNy) were deposited with a chemical composition in the range of 0 < x < 1 and 0 < y < 1. For the W-N system, the α-W, β-W, and β-W2N phases were identified according to the amount of nitrogen. In the W-O-N system the structure depended on the amount of oxygen. For an oxygen fraction, fO2 = CO/(CO+CN), smaller than 0.46 the β-W2N phase is evident, whereas above that value the structure became amorphous.

Abstract: In this work, W-S-Ti films were deposited by r.f. magnetron sputtering, using simultaneously WS2 and Ti targets. The atomic percentage of Ti in the coating was varied from 0 at.% up to 28 at.%. No significant variations in the S/W ratio with the increase of Ti content were observed. The increasing Ti contents in the films led to a gradual loss of crystallinity. Coatings with contents greater than ≈ 16 at.% only presents a broad peak characteristic of amorphous structures. Alloying the films with Ti led to significant improvements in the hardness (from 0.3 to 8.9 GPa). Also, the adhesive critical load continuously grew with the increase of the Ti content in the films. The wear coefficient of the films dropped more than one order of magnitude with the increase of Ti content whereas the friction coefficient was kept fairly constant with just a small increase in relation to single W-S film. In conclusion, to have a good tribological performance, the addition of Ti to the films should be balanced in order that the increase of the mechanical properties does not lead to severe loss of the self-lubricant properties.

Abstract: Steels continue to have a preponderant role in mechanical components under all type of wear solicitations namely, abrasion. The ability of micro-scale abrasion test for evaluating the properties of bulk materials has been widely demonstrated. However, only recently this technique was especially developed to characterize thin-coated materials. This study presents results obtained in micro-scale abrasion tests performed on different low and high alloy steels. These steel samples underwent thermal and chemical (nitriding) treatments with the aim of enhancing their surface hardness. Nitriding parameters were varied so as to obtain different structures (with and without formation of a “white layer” of iron nitrides (ε-Fe2-3N or γ’-Fe4N compound layer). Test conditions such as normal load and concentration of the abrasive medium (SiC particles in distilled water) were changed in order to obtain a 2 or 3 body wear contact type. Results obtained allowed to compare the specific wear rate ks for the different steels and treatments tested as well as to relate the influence of surface hardness and test parameters on the wear mechanisms.

Abstract: A commercial RF-sputtering deposition rig was employed to deposit H-free diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings. The influence of alloying elements such as Ti and Si on the structure, mechanical and tribological properties of the coatings was investigated. The coating was observed in cross section and in plan view with SEM, TEM and AFM. Because of the highly-ionized plasma generated by the RF-powered glow discharge, ion bombardment suppresses the formation of a columnar structure regardless of the composition of the coatings. The method produces featureless microstructures and smooth surfaces. TEM investigations confirm that no crystalline phases form in the coatings regardless of the presence of considerable concentrations of Ti and Si. Tribological tests were performed with a high-temperature tribometer in a ball-on-disk configuration, using coated disks and different materials for the ball countepart. At ambient T the sliding friction coefficient decreases as the concentration of alloying elements increases. Nevertheless, high-T tribotests with a constant thermal load showed that the presence of alloying elements decreases the thermal stability of the coatings. For each coating a temperature exists above which a sudden increase of friction coefficient is observed, with subsequent detachment and failure of the coatings. The mechanism of disruption of the self-lubrication effects is identified and the influence of the alloying elements on the thermal degradation of tribological performance of the coatings is discussed.
