A Simplified Prediction on Deflection of Web-Core Sandwich Beam in Weak Direction

Abstract:

Through theoretical analysis of a simplified model for web-core sandwich beam, a simple equation for predicting the deflection of such beam in the weak direction is deduced. The obtained equation is verifed by comparing the predicted deflection of a web-core sandwich beam with reported finite element result. It is found that the presented equation can provide reasonably accurate estimation in analyzing the static behaviour of web-core sandwich beam in weak direction. Additionally, it is also found that the deformation of a web-core sandwich beam is caused mainly by shear deformation while the flexural deflection is much smaller compared to the shear deformation
