An Influence of Chinese Traditional Geomantic Concept on Layout of Settlements in Huizhou - With an Example of the Pingshan Village

Abstract:

Huizhou’s building cultural content is abundant, and its building activities are almost all under the deep influence of so-called geomantic omen. Firstly, the article explains the geomantic concept from popular and professional angles. Secondly, it analyses one by one that the Chinese old-line geomantic concept has had a great influence on the architectural ruins in primitive society, the settlements’ sites selection in Huizhou, residence, landscape and space layout. Finally, with an example of the Pingshan Village in ancient Huizhou, the article makes a thorough study and analysis on the influence which the Chinese traditional the geomantic conception has had on the layout of the settlements in Huizhou. It concludes that the geomantic essence is to unite sky, land and person as one highly and construct an ideal ecological environment for living.
