Research and Analysis of Active Earth Pressure on Retaining Walls with Layered Non-Cohesive Backfills

Article Preview

Abstract:

Based on the method of level-layer analysis , with the sliding harmonious condition of layered backfills considered , the theoretical answers to the unit earth pressures , the resultant earth pressures and the points of application of the resultant earth pressures on retaining walls with layered non-cohesive backfills are set up . The comparisons are made with Coulomb’s formula.

[1] 921 Conclusions (1) The rupture line is assumed as a broken line through the heel , together with sliding harmonious condition of layered backfills, and the method of level - layer analysis is introduced to calculate the earth pressure acting on the retaining walls with layered non-cohesive backfills. The nonlinear distributions of active earth pressure on retaining walls with rough backs can be explained by using the method. (2) The resultant forces calculated by using the method are approximately equal to those calculated by using Coulomb theory. So, this method is reasonable. (3) The ability of the walls to resist overturning is overestimated by using Coulomb theory . The proposed methods can make the design of the retaining wall safer and more reasonable.
