Influence of the Sharpening Methods for Drill Flank Surfaces on the Compressive Strength of PCD Inserts

Article Preview

Abstract:

In this paper, a polycrystalline diamond drill was designed to machine non-ferrous difficult-to-machine materials. The effect of the sharpening methods for drill flank surfaces on the compressive strength was investigated by using finite element method. The results show that the compressive strength of plane grinding is better than that of conical grinding method, however, with the increasing of the clearance angle of the drill, the compressive stress increased significantly.
