Abstract:

This paper interprets the function and effect of material media in decorative art. It explores the extension and development of material media in decorative art, from the historical viewpoint. It advances that modern decorative art must be investigated from the new perspective, that is, the view of integrated material is used to explore and study modern decorative art. This is based on the fact that art tends to be generally integrated. Under such circumstances, its artistic expression and avant-garde ideas tend to have a direct correlation with material media, analyzing from its artistic value and aesthetic experience. More importantly, its artistic essence is supposed to be interpreted from its abstractness and self-expression of space.

[1] The abstract expression of materials is the important language form of modern decorative art An adult has a better understanding of the essential characteristics of materials in nature as the result of the years of life experience. Even when the concrete form of a material is not in sight, as long as it is mentioned, people will feel some sense, which is called the abstract expression of material, such as iron's toughness, wood's warmth, cotton's softness, stainless steel's coldness and so on. Abstract expression of materials is more often used, through specific forms of visual and tactile patterns, to convey the feelings of people and to make an impact on humans. Modern metal art deco is the practical transformation of the traditional metal decorative art. It not only retains the traditional origin of hand-made metal decorative art, but also presents modern visual features, so it obtains a unique character for its rich texture and material technology, pursuing the beauty of metal itself and its traces of processing. It possesses many ideas like "self-expression," "irrational" and "unconscious" in the modern aesthetics. The modern metal decorative art shows exaggerated, romantic, beautiful, bizarre style, giving people a great visual pleasure, thanks to the support of the richness of materials and the modernity of processing technology. For example, the works of Japanese artist, Hisada Tetsuya, makes full use of metal copper, which has a strong visual impact on people by means of the change of texture from the natural state to the state after processing, to guide people to make a deep thinking about the relationship between technology and environment. The French sculptor Albert • Filo particularly prefers the inspiration and passion brought to artists from the randomness and chance appearing in the course of metal melting, cutting, smelting, distortion. As is demonstrated in the picture of the works, he believes that the comfortable integration into the process of operating, resulting in a pleasant abstract aesthetic experience, is itself an important content of the target of the creation. Filo is obsessed with the study of stainless steel sculptures, and his style has become increasingly abstract. Known as the most inspired "magician", he can make anything he wants, each of which is fine and delicate, full of infinite vitality, because stainless steel can be changed infinitely in his nimble fingers. It can be said it is the high degree of metal materials properties and various possibilities of modern technology that better display the unique charm of modern metal art deco like brilliance, or depth, or elegance, or beauty, or the vicissitudes. Of course, for the need of design ideas, artists sometimes choose a form of language expressed by unconventional materials, such as the curling hard rock, elegant- stated copper, pull-up and pull-down zipper installed in the flow of water. People will be surprised in the face of such material language at the very beginning, and after thinking carefully, they might be able to deeply explore some problems.

[2] The self-expression space of materials Aesthetic experience of materials is the natural attributes of material itself, including color, shape, temperature, transparency, hardness, etc. Different materials have different spiritual values and spiritual direction. On the other hand, it also refers to the materials or the artificial materials that are sublimated to become artistic language, as the carrier of the human spirit, through the artist's conceiving and processing. Such works are in the pursuit of purely subjective image configuration, setting aside the utilitarian concept of these works, disengaging the attachment to the main body. With a fearfully modern philosophy, modern fiber art is the transformation from the traditional mode and stresses on the comprehensive representation of materials. It is mainly composed of two forms, that is, modern hanging and soft sculptures. By definition, a wall hanging is a large decorative piece of fabric or other material to be hung on the wall of a room or on outdoor walls. Using a variety of materials and techniques, it basically takes the form of plane or half three-dimensional object that bears a relationship with walls, indoor environment and space, and leads to the creation of fiber art "integrated with the wall". American artist Bruce Conner is famous for the abstract language form of its work, rich texture expression and distinctive concept and therefore is described as one of the representatives of the modern fiber art. Appearing officially in the mid-20th century, soft sculpture mainly refers to a work of art, with the following process of making: first make a stand, and then combine plane woven fiber products and three-dimensional framework, some even do not need any support, and make full use of the material stiffness to make it a work, which can stands on its feet. [3] Sublimation of objects' decorative properties through material media Decorative properties of everyday objects have dual characteristics, attached to their bodies. First, it must be subordinate to the principal body, indicating its features, qualities and value from the perspective of aesthetic decoration; then, it can also be independent of the principal body, showing its unique aesthetic value. This has been perfectly embodied by art deco of modern glass, which has a close relationship with the human being and almost covers the whole of human life. Glassware is a traditional form, and its production is increased through industrialization. Moreover, the change in its shape is almost arbitrarily go-as-you-please, with the penetration of modern design concepts. In 1962, the artist Harvey K. Littleton realized his dream of firing glass in a small furnace in the studio, making glass art separate from industry. By action, he demonstrated that hot glass can be considered as the most expressive art materials, endowing glass with emotion and life ever since. The decorative pattern of Australian artist's "fruit plate" was reminiscent of classical metalworking products, sparkling metallic-like luster. And Richard Marquis's "a corrugated bottle" is with a bop flavor. They both served as containers, but take on two completely different appearances, as the result of different styles of decorating wares by means of the plasticity of the materials themselves. In some art forms, the decorative function is to make works more intensely artistic and to satisfy people's spiritual needs to the greatest degree, resulting in the situation that practical function will disappear, and the only aim is to meet the greatest psychological needs, such examples are pottery, fiber art and so on. Conclusions In the history of artistic creation, many artists have become fascinated with one or more material properties, and consciously or unconsciously relished them, hoping to explore their own self-inductance from the material or to find more unique artistic language, which better suited them. This is the inevitable process of artists' growing experience, which is also the motivation to promote the material art to move forward continuously. The creation of decorative art is based on a variety of physical properties and chemical properties of materials, and fully understands the personal experience of language. The openness and tolerance of the art deco have led to the fact that the complexity of the classification of materials is essentially not different from painting and sculpture, so-called pure art, all of which exist as pure spiritual products for appreciation. With the development of modern science, processing technology and 3D technology, the exploitation and utilization of various old and new materials will greatly enrich the ideas of artists. The innovation of the artistic concepts has brought new challenges to art deco, that is to say, decorative artists are carrying the mission to create, highlighting the concepts, conveying them to their works, and delivering the decorative beauty to audience. They not only enrich our lives, but also bring a new look to the decorative design and production of practical objects, which are made from new materials, while conducting an in-depth study and developing the possibility of media materials.
