Road Texture Influence on Tire Rolling Resistance

Article Preview

Abstract:

Tire rolling resistance is one of the most important resistive forces acting on road vehicles. It depends on tire and surface characteristics as well as vehicle operating parameters. This paper deals with the influence of road surface texture on rolling resistance of passenger car tires. Results of road measurements performed on variety of road surfaces are presented.

[4] Other than in linear method, the CTM evaluates MPD not in longitudinal direction but around a circle 284 mm in diameter. The results of two methods may differ very much in case of directional texture (like grooved cement concrete). In Figure 3, relation between MPD measured by CTM method and rolling resistance coefficient for tire SRTT TUG is presented. Comparison of Fig 1 and Fig. 3 reveals that during RRT a much bigger influence of MPD on rolling resistance was measured than during tests at the MnRoad Facility. The slope of the regression line for results averaged over three tested tires and two speeds (50 km/h and 80 km/h) in case of MnRoad Facility is only 0. 0004 in contrast to the value of 0. 0017 for tests in Nantes. A significant difference between MPD influence on rolling resistance was so mysterious, that it was decided to repeat MPD measurements on the test sections at the MnRoad Facility using linear method (Robo-Tex 3 system). The slope of the regression line based on MPD measured by Robo-Tex was the same - see Fig. 4 It was however noticed that such low slope is mostly caused by five porous, experimental road surfaces characterized by very high values of MPD. When those five porous road surfaces were removed from calculations, the slope increased to 0. 0011 and was more similar to the slope obtained during RRT. Figure 3. Influence of MPD (CTM) on rolling resistance coefficient for tire SRTT TUG during tests at the MnRoad Facility Conclusions The results of road rolling resistance measurements on the track in Nantes confirmed a linear relationship between the rolling resistance and the mean profile depth MPD. However, tests performed at MnRoad Facility in USA showed less influence of texture than in case of tests in Nantes. It is difficult to find explanation to this phenomenon so more measurements in USA are planned for year 2014. It is also planned that modernized trailer R2 will be equipped with on-a board texture measuring system, so texture measurements will be perfectly synchronized with rolling resistance measurements. This may help to establish a more reliable relations between MPD and CRR. Figure 4. Influence of MPD (Robo-Tex) on rolling resistance coefficient for three tires during tests at the MnRoad Facility.
