In this work it is shown how the microscopic residual stress state in 6061Al-15vol%SiCw
composites can be modified by plastic strain and by isothermal annealing (the latter, affecting also
the precipitation state).
They have improved mechanical properties with respect to those of the corresponding unreinforced metallic matrices and this improvement is achieved without a significant increase in weight.
Moreover, the (311) plane for fcc lattices is one of the less affected by texture between the low-indexed planes.
These results point out that the difference of CTE and the temperature drop are the most important factors determining the magnitude of the m-RS.
Since the latter are not affected by plastic deformation, the present result is expected.
