Engineering practice shows [3, 4] that medium and large span bridges have better economic benefit combined with corrugated steel web PC box-girder composite structures, which can reduce the weight of the superstructure, so the materials of substructure decrease and cost of the bridges is lower [5, 6].

Composite materials are increasingly used in civil field for structural strengthening.
For these reasons, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is becoming more and more important in many applications of civil engineering industry.
Particularly, optical fibers seem to be very suited to the use of the SHM for civil structures, thanks to their intrinsic properties.
Conclusions In this work, an experimental study was performed on a smart device (called Smart Patch - SP) for civil applications, made of an FRP plate with an optical fiber sensor embedded inside during the manufacturing process.
Maddaluno, Development and some investigative testing of smart structural FRP devices with embedded fiber optic sensor for health monitoring of civil structures, Advances in Structural Engineering, Vol. 13 No. 5 (2010) 905-925
