A key factor to meet these new criteria is to gain better knowledge on how to affect the fatigue limit of the cast iron used today.
The FWHM values indicate that the amount of deformation at the surface is smaller for the mechanical polished specimen and reaching the un-affected level earlier.
Even though the fatigue properties were improved, no obvious changes in the microstructure could be detected with ECCI.

Nevertheless, further growth in use will be possible with the continuous improvement of the mechanical and other exploitation properties of this material.
One of the new ways to achieve better mechanical properties of silicon nitride ceramics is the incorporation of different carbon inclusions into ceramic matrixes with the purpose to increase their fracture resistance.
Mechanical parameters of Si3N4 based ceramics.
On the other hand, the formation of CNTs agglomerations affects the value of hardness, caused by the increase of porosity: the density of composite samples is 2.681g/cm 3 against 3.125 g/cm 3 of reference ones.
Summary The controlling of the mechanical properties of Si3N4 composites is possible via the modification of their composition and processing conditions knowing how microstructure peculiarities can influence the mechanical behavior.

Welded joints are fracture initiation points because of the effects of microstructural and mechanical inhomogeneities [1], and residual stress induced by welding is one of the most important factors in reliability diagnosis.
However, they suffer from the difficulty of separating microstructural effects on physical parameters from the effects of residual stress, since all these techniques are highly sensitive to metallurgical factors such as grain size and texture [3].
Hence a new mechanical testing method for residual stress evaluation is needed.
The instrumented indentation technique, which measures load and depth continuously during indentation and analyzes load-depth curve, has been developed for evaluating hardness, elastic modulus, tensile properties and the like [5, 6].
In addition, the stress directionality factor k was pre-determined and non-equi-biaxial stress states could be considered.

Traditionally, several factors including roughness of surface, work-hardening and residual stress of surficial coat were regarded as the evaluation criterions of machining surface quality.
Meanwhile, there appears to be a new requirement for edge form in the manufacturing of the mechanical parts, particularly microminiaturized parts[1].
The oxide layer, subsurface layer and intermediate layer can also have some alteration and then do affect the service performance of parts.
Integrated cutting surface is a feature class consisting of the surface geometry morphology, the shape of the edge (burr) and the surface layer properties, that is surface integrity makes the systematic characterization through the three parts including its surface quality, the edge quality and sub-surface quality.
Since the surface roughness is reduced, the number of processing steps of a nickel base alloy turbine disk is reduced by approximately 10%; thereby the cost of production is reduced while the part performance would not be affected.

Fe and Mn-rich intermetallic phases are well known to be strongly influential on mechanical properties in Al-Si alloys.
It forms intermetallic compounds that are detrimental to static and dynamical mechanical properties [1].
It would be of great benefit to the casting industry if technologies could be available that allow to control these phases and handle the morphology and spatial arrangement of these intermetallics in aluminum casting such that the mechanical properties are positively affected by them.
Essential to the facility is first the optical control of the processing due to the transparency of the aerogel crucible used, second the flat isotherms in the samples, due to the extremely low thermal conductivity of aerogels and third that due to the aerogel properties a magnetic field device could be brought very close to the sample.
These simple models lead to a power law of the type [12-14]: b ftMB ⋅⋅≈2λ (1) with B a geometric magnification factor, M the magnification factor containing all material constants (diffusion coefficient, Gibbs-Thomson coefficient, eutectic concentration, global concentration, liquidus slope and segregation coefficient), tf the solidification time, that is the time for which the solid and the liquid co-existed and b = ⅓ for diffusive mass transport.

The results will be used to verify a numerical analysis model, which will be further used to conduct a parametric study of the influential factors.
Their application in timber structures against the longitudinal cracks has also been increasing; however, little research work has been done on how much the mechanical behavior of wood can be improved by wrapping fiber composite sheets.
The results will be used to verify a numerical analysis model, which will be further used to conduct a parametric study of the influential factors.
The material properties of the wood and fiber composite sheets were obtained from material properties tests.
Further study will conducted by using a numerical analysis model to take into more influential factors on the compressive behavior of wood with circumferential confinement.
