This work was focused on an evaluation of characteristics of surface laser hardening on contact and bending fatigue resistance of a 42CrMo4 steel, being often used for manufacture of gear wheels, with the aim to gain necessary experimental data, knowledge about damage mechanisms and to optimise the laser treatment technology and its parameters.
Firstly, reduction of fatigue limit corresponds to the notch concentration factor 1.8 in case of specimens with basic HT.
In case of laser longitudinal treatment, its effective value for fatigue limit reduction only is 1.35 indicating that some other phenomena are acting – compressive residual stresses.
