This is because the absorption of the silicon-based zeolite filter material to ammonia nitrogen tends to saturation and part of ammonia nitrogen which has been absorbed released from silicon-based zeolite filter material.
It can be seen by scanning electronic microscope that the filter material in the anoxic column covered by biological membrane appears black and the filter material in the aerobic column appears yellowish-brown.
(3) After the start-up finished, each column both the surface and interior of media are completely covered with a thick transparent layer of biofilm rich in species, which plays an important role in the degradation of pollutants. 5 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This work was funded by the National Scientific Foundation China (NSFC51178207), Shandong Provincial National Science Foundation (ZR2011EEM003), the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province (ZR2012EEL21).
