A Moment-Shear Story Model for the Design of Steel Frames with Semi-Rigid Connections Xi-Bing HU1 ,a, Yu-Wei Yang1 ,b, Guo-Jing He1, Yun-Lei Fan1, Peng Zhou1 1College of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Central South University of Forestry and Technology, Changsha, 410082, China ahxb_is_me@126.com, byangyuwei1210@gmail.com,ccegjhe@hotmail.com , dfanyunlei@163.com, ezhoupenglly@126.com, Keywords: Steel structures; Semi-rigid connections; Story model; Lateral stiffness; Horizontal deflection Abstract: A moment-shear story model using the static condensation method is proposed for the steel frame with semi-rigid connections.
Introduction Following the earthquakes happened in Northridge (1994) and in Kobe (1995), engineers have been aware of that[1,2], compared to the rigid connections, semi-rigid steel frame is more capable of emerging plastic hinges at the ends of the beam, since the semi-rigid connection shows more stable hysteresis behavior, better ductility and higher capability of energy dissipation and can be used to prevent the collapse of the structure due to damaged connection.
(1) The lateral stiffness and lateral deformation calculation formulas derived in this paper is suitable for various kinds of connections, which leads to a general applicability in engineering cases
(3) The simplified method possesses the benefits of the simplicity, the practicability and higher precision, and is suitable for the preliminary design of steel-frame engineering project.
