Sinkage of a Chinese Ancient Rampart Soil by Simulation Qian Zhou1,2,a, Weiming Yan1,b 1 Beijing Key Laboratory of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Retrofit,Beijing University of Technology-China 2 Imperial Palace Museum-China azy_7225@yahoo.com.cn, byanwm@bjut.edu.cn Keywords: Holes inside soil, soil sinkage, rainwater penetration, finite element analysis, Chinese ancient rampart Abstract: To protect Chinese ancient building an ancient rampart in the Forbidden City was taken as an example to study sinkage of soil in it as well as effects the sinkage may bring to the rampart.Considering hole at different depth of the soil as well as mechanical parameters for soil and masonry wall, finite element model of the rampart was built.3 cases including weight of soil and wall, live load and rainwater penetration condition were considered to study the deformation, stress and strain of both wall and soil by simulation. Results show that the existing holes affect little to sinkage of the soil
According to survey data, the rampart soil is made up of 4 types of silty clay (S1-S4,not including brick surface), engineering characteristic of each type is shown in Table 2,where γ represents bulk density (kN/m3), φ1 represents internal friction angle (o),C represents cohesive strength (Kpa), φ2 represents expansion angle (o),Es represents modulus of compression (Mpa).
