When ions of Cu doped into CeO2 lattice, it locates in grain boundary to inhibit the growth of CeO2 crystals.
Since the radii of Cu+/Cu2+ and Ce4+for coordination number 6 are 0.091, 0.087 and 0.101 nm, respectively [13], it is easy for copper ions to cooperate with the matrix of the CeO2 particles without causing a significant crystalline distortion.
