Visual examination
Visual examination of the failed helical gear showed that a number of adjacent teeth and random teeth failed by fatigue, as shown in Fig. 3 (a).
The failed gear outer surface region as shown in Fig. 5 (a) can be seen with a transgranular fracture and intergranular fracture crack propagation is along grain boundaries which these results indicate that the mode of fracture within this outer periphery of the gear was brittle.

The reason is that with increasing in deformation, metal atomic kinetic energy increases, and amplitude of atomic thermal vibration also increases, making displacement activity and slip system increase, so as to improve deformation compatibility between crystal grains.
While with increasing in strain rate, deformation time of unit strain reduces, and the number and the speed of dislocation movement increase, which makes the chance of dislocation crisscross and the density of balancing dislocation increase, so as to raise critical shear stress.
