The Stability and Management of “Sandwich” Type Slopes in Extrusive Rock Area Hong wei1, a, Hong Wang2,b 1,2College of civil engineering and architecture, Hainan University, Haikou, 570228, China a wennhong @163.com, b 331759289@qq.com Key words: “sandwich” type slope; failure form; management method Abstract: Northern area of Hainan Island is located in the south of Leiqiong faulted zone; new tectonic movement and volcanic activity have intense since late tertiary.
The slope composed of this soil layer is unstable as its engineering property is poor, The central part is extrusive rock which is mainly the columnar basalt, the stratum thickness may reach about 8.0m and the diameter may reach 1.5~2.0m.
Under dry condition, they have better engineering properties and high strength; bur its intensity reduces largely and the engineering properties become worse after immerse in water.
Appropriate management methods according to different types engineering requirements Based on the engineering or building requirements on slope stability and consider the geological environment where the slope locates, this kind of slope can be divided into two categories to consider from the management perspective The management for high demand on slope deformation.
It is widely used in practical engineering as its characteristics, a light-duty structure, saving masonry, construction convenient and beautiful appearance and so on.
