The Vertical and Horizontal Spectra of Near-fault Ground Motions Yin Jiang1, a, Zhou Xian-yan1,b, He Guo-jing1,c 1 College of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Central South Universityof Forestry and Technology, Changsha, Hunan, 410004, China ayinjiang2001@yahoo.com.cn, b zxy560805@163.com, c cegjhe@hotmail.com Keywords: Near-fault; Response spectra; Vertical ground motion.
In this paper, a suite of 30 near-fault ground motion records are downloaded from strong motion database of Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center in U.S., Using the horizontal component and the larger vertical component in each set, the horizontal and vertical elastic acceleration response spectra are established within the periodic range of 0 to 10 sec, and have been compared with each other as regard to their maximum value and spectrum shape.
Response spectra of near-fault ground motions The traditional view of earthquake engineering assumes that the horizontal seismic- action is the dominant factor leading to structural damage, and the vertical seismic action could be neglected to some extent.
So far UBC97 is the unique seismic code amending the design response spectrum according to near-fault effect factor, and represents the development trend in future seismic engineering.
Such phenomenon must be serially considered in engineering design and evaluation especially to structures with short or medium fundamental period.

Stress Analysis in the Combination of Footplate and Caisson Foundation NIKEN Silmi Surjandari1, YUSEP Muslih Purwana2, RENSIA Erlyana Majid3 1, 2, 3) Department of Civil Engineering, Sebelas Maret University, Jl.
Introduction The determination of the type and dimension of foundation has been an interesting object of the study for the engineer to obtain the most economic value i.e the highest bearing capacity with the reasonable cost.
The placement of caisson underneath the footplate contributed to the decease in settlement risk. [5] Based on afformentioned background, the study on combined footplate-caisson foundation is very important to obtain the thoretical basis for the engineer to design a foundation.
